Update: Seeing Machines soars on latest technology
Shares in AIM-listed Seeing Machines (SEE) more than doubled in value on Monday, rocketing up 56% by midday on Monday after a 25% climb earlier in the morning as it unveiled its role in the launch of ground-breaking 3D technology.
Seeing announced the arrival of Toshiba's new Qosmio F750, the world's first 3D laptop that requires no special glasses for watching movies or playing games in 3D.
Its capability is underpinned by Seeing's faceAPI component, which allows the laptop's built-in webcam to track the viewer's eye position and Seeing Machines will receive a royalty for each unit sold.
Chief executive Ken Kroeger said that this is only the beginning of a new era in glasses-free 3D. "We have worked closely with SuperD, a world leader in display technology and glasses-free 3D, to bring this new technology to fruition and in March we announced the contract between the companies."
He added that the faceAPI/SuperD solution is being looked at closely by global players in the portable and tablet device market who are interested in this capability.
"We believe this launch is the first of many and will provide strong impetus for growth of the faceAPI business particularly in the consumer electronics market," Kroeger concluded.
Initial reviewers write that the tracking is accurate and quick to respond, and Engadget bloggers wrote that videos they watched on the F750 "were pretty mouth-watering".
The 3D business brings a welcome boost to the company and its shares, following patchy performance in recent months.
In March, the company said that revenues had doubled to AU$4 million (£2.6 million) in the second half of last year as its safety technology was installed in vehicles for mining companies. The royalty-based agreement for the 3D component should ensure steadier revenue flow.
