I read this report as well but in my opinion there is more chance of a UK bank failing. The authorities in the US and Europe realise they need to act to avoid a depression whilst the UK seems quite happy for a bank to fail....

It would be a surprise if Northern Rock wasnt writing down the value of its assets. Go to the Motley Fool dealing with debt board, and you will find case after case of people with NR mortgages struggling to repay. That will hit NR profitability. They were the most reckless of lenders, and consequently they are finding that their mortgage book is far less than rock solid....

point is if a whopper is about to fail; why are we propping up a mid-size bank which has created much of the problem by grabbing the mortgage marlket with senseless 125% mortage loans?
