FTSE constrained by strong pound and disappointing corporate results

Strength in sterling, on raised hopes of a bespoke Brexit deal, and a series of disappointing results from index heavyweights helped trip the FTSE 100 up on Tuesday. By the close the index of leading UK shares was down slightly, just short of the 7,250 mark though off session lows.

As results season starts to get into full swing, numbers from banking group HSBC (HSBC) came in short of expectations with fourth quarter underlying profit of $3.6bn 8% below consensus analyst forecasts. The shares fell 3.4% to 735p in response.
