ETFs and ETCs
Investor appetite for exchange traded products such as Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and Exchange Traded Commodities ETCs has grown considerably in recent years as investors look to diversify their portfolios and gain access to those harder to reach markets.
Both products trade simply like ordinary shares and the fact they are exchange traded means they are generally liquid and available to retail investors.
Exchange Traded Funds or ETFs are generally designed to mirror the performance of an underlying Index such as the FTSE 100 or hold a basket of shares. By purchasing units or shares in an ETF you can gain exposure to a country index or market through a single share holding.
Exchange Traded Commodities on the other hand, as the name suggests, will track the underlying performance of commodities such as metals, agricultural products and even livestock.
With all investments, the value of ETFs and ETCs can fall as well as rise and you may get back less than you initially invested. Investing is not for everyone and if you are unsure, please seek independent advice.
Please ensure that you read the prospectus for each product fully understand the product, its structure and the associated risks.
The price and value of investments and their income fluctuates: you may get back less than the amount you invested. The tax treatment of investments is subject to tax law and HMRC practice which are subject to change.
Top 10 Performing ETPs
Star ratings: They are based on quantitative historical performance measures, and funds are ranked within their own sectors. The lowest rated funds in a sector carry a single star, and the highest 10% are awarded five stars. Funds without a star rating are usually less than three years old or are in a small (less than 10 funds), or unclassified sector. A fund with no star rating need not necessarily be viewed as a poor fund.
Risk ratings: These range from very low, to very high and are colour-coded from green through to red. Funds without a risk rating are usually too young to have been assigned a risk rating.
All prices in pence sterling (GBX) unless otherwise specified. Price total return performance figures are calculated on a bid price to bid price basis (mid to mid for OEICs) with net income (dividends) reinvested. Performance figures are shown in sterling unless otherwise specified.
