Pre-Close Trading Update
Alliance Pharma plc (AIM: APH), the speciality pharmaceutical company, announces its pre-close trading update for the year ended 31 December 2011. The Board expects to report turnover for 2011 of around £46m and for pre-tax profits to be in line with market expectations.
Sales of Hydromol and ImmuCystTM continued to grow well.
During the year, sales of Deltacortril / enteric coated prednisolone continued to be affected by increased competition and by a shift in the prednisolone market towards uncoated tablets. Deltacortril sales for 2011 were £4.7m, of which sales of £1.1m were generated in the second half of the year.
Sales of Nu-Seals in the Republic of Ireland were £5.1m, up 14% on the prior year despite a price reduction at the start of 2011 and the launch of a generic competitor during autumn 2011. However, we remain cautious about the outlook for Nu-Seals in the current year because the Irish government is continuing to look at measures to reduce its medicines bill.
We are implementing a number of efficiency measures and other cost savings and believe that these steps, together with the impact of the three acquisitions completed in 2011, should largely compensate for the impact of the further reduction in sales of Deltacortril and the risk to Nu-Seals.

Acquisition of Dermatology Brands
Alliance Pharma plc (AIM: APH), the speciality pharmaceutical company, announces that its wholly owned subsidiary Alliance Pharmaceuticals Limited has acquired the brands QuinodermTM and CeanelTM from Ferndale Pharmaceuticals Limited for £1.5m cash consideration.
Quinoderm is a well-established medication for the treatment of acne and Ceanel is a shampoo treatment for scalp psoriasis. For the twelve months ended 30 September 2011 the acquired products had total sales of approximately £0.6 million.
Alliance is funding the acquisition by drawing a loan from the £20m Revolving Credit Facility ("RCF") put in place in November 2010 to fund acquisitions. This brings the current utilisation of the RCF to £6.5m.
Commenting on the acquisition, John Dawson, Alliance Pharma's Chief Executive, said: "We are delighted to announce this acquisition, which extends our Dermatology portfolio. Quinoderm complements our existing product Rizuderm (isotretinoin), a treatment for severe acne acquired in September this year.
"Today's acquisition, which represents our third transaction this year, is expected to be earnings enhancing in 2012. We continue to evaluate further opportunities to broaden our product portfolio."

I happened to be at a Pharma event the other night. Alliance's guy who is charged with making acquisitions won an award as 'Business Development Executive of the year' in an even hosted by the Pharmaceutical Licensing Group and AstraZeneca. There is some pretty robust judging at that event. I thought it just shows Alliance's peers in the industry rate what they are doing.
