Despite achieving a number of key milestones in the year, necessary development and design changes specific to this project have arisen and the Company is now putting a revised timetable and plan in place for the field trial to go live in H2 2010, as opposed to Q4 2009 as previously reported. 	Firstly; a minor correction to my earlier post - I said that I expected CBM wells to be relatively shallow in depth. This is not correct, having done some reading up this morning, I've since learned that it is the deeper unmineable coal seams that are drilled for coal bed methane, which tells me that DGC technology may have contribution to offer, if the reservoir characteristics are right for it. In an NPC article called Unconventional Gas, refer to link below, if you care to go to page 52 you will see a table that lists technology challenges for the four main areas of unconventional gas, and it indicates downhole compressors as one technology that could be considered for three out of the four, namely; shale gas, tight gas and coal bed methane. 	Many thanks for your post and for sharing the link to the schlumberger article on unconventional gas resources which I found very interesting. I note that it says that average production currently from 'tight' gas reservoirs is 170 Mcf/d which it would seem is definitely too low for current DGC technology. The range and characteristics of tight reservoirs varies considerably and there may be a few that could exhibit high enough flow rates suitable for a DGC. The 'gas' pumps you referred to are used for dewatering of wells or reinjection for refracturing. The pumps are pumping water that has a relatively high content of gas. Pumping gas is not really the correct terminology to use. We pump liquids, and we compress gas. The DGC is capable of handling liquid loading up to about 17% liquid (according to SPE 116406) therefore if the coal seam is deep enough, once the well is dewatered and if the permeability is sufficiently improved, then it's a possibility a DGC could be used to provide artificial lift during the 3rd stage of gas production assuming the reservoir size is large enough to produce enough. However I should expect that most coal bed methane wells will be relatively shallow in depth and a DGC will not be beneficial. The main application of the DGC in my opinion is always going to be in conventional wells. The mention that the world's gas hydrates could contain twice as much potential fuel as coal, oil & conventional gas combined is interesting. Rough estimates are 60 million Tcf - 5000 times more than conventional gas! Just need to find an economical method of extracting the gas from the hydrates and the world's energy resource problems could be solved for centuries! R&D is still in early stages but the first test production facilities are expected to happen within the next couple of years and the first commercial production facilities within the following 5 years. 	I'm not sure what the economics of unconventional gas production are compared with conventional gas production. My impression is that shale gas, for example, is relatively cheap to produce because the wells are much shallower than most conventional gas wells and therefore drilling costs are much lower. It is true that production of gas from sources such as shale has taken off only in relatively recent years but, as I understand it, that is not because the presence of gas in shales was not known (weren't shales used for gas/oil production during WWII?) or that shales were expensive to drill into. The problem has been that the gas in shales is 'tight gas', i.e. difficult to get out of the shale becuse of the structure of shales. Major advances that have enabled shale gas production to grow have been in techniques to fracture the shales so as to let the gas out. I understand that the material used to fracture shales is often water under high pressure and that when the gas begins to flow there is a lot of water associated with it. The flow of water decreases as the gas flow build up and eventually the gas flow also declines. I am doubtful that the DGC would be a viable proposition for most shale gas production because the individual wells are apparently much smaller than for conventional gas wells. I also doubt that the DGC would be that effective in pumping the gas out of shales at acceptable flow rates because it is so tightly trapped. And if there is a lot of water in the gas that could also be a problem. I understand also that for coal bed methane there is a problem with coal fines causing high rates of attrition of the gas pumps that have been used up to now. 	Here's a link to a recent article in the Sunday Times : http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/natural_resources/article6898015.ece My view is that although the production of shale gas could affect world gas prices, it won't affect the business viability of DGC as it's market is already there. You could argue that even if the price of gas goes down over the next few years as a result of shale gas production in the US, then DGC would become even more attractive to producers in keeping existing wells producing for longer.
