ALMATY, June 10 (Reuters) - Kazakh metals company Kazakhmys said on Wednesday it had suspended zinc production at its Balkhash plant in Kazakhstan due to low demand.
It said in a statement that demand for zinc concentrate exceeded that for finished zinc products and described the plant's suspension as "planned". Kazakhmys also said it would reconstruct and modernise the facility.

"Zinc concentrate production is economically more viable in current market conditions," the London-listed company said in a Russian language statement.
It was unclear how long the facility would remain shut.
The statement said the company would assist zinc production workers in gaining alternative employment.
Kazakhmys produced 48,000 tonnes of zinc in 2008 and 137,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate, the statement said.
Higher than expected zinc prices at this stage of the global recession could encourage some producers to restart idled capacity, which would keep the market in surplus for longer, industry experts say.

LONDON, June 9 (Reuters) - Kazakh mining group Kazakhmys Plc reduced by a quarter the size of revolving loan facility for a German unit when it refinanced it, the London-listed firm said on Tuesday.
The company, whose main product is copper, cut the facility to 170 million euros ($236 million) from 230 million euros when it refinanced the three-year facility for subsidiary MKM, the group's downstream copper business in Germany.
"The group has been able to reduce the size of the facility, due to lower copper prices and more efficient management of inventory," a statement said.
The trade finance facility, used for working capital requirements, was arranged by Deutsche Bank and was oversubscribed in syndication, it added.
"We are extremely pleased with the outcome of the refinancing, given the challenging conditions in financial markets," Chief Financial Officer Matthew Hird.
