Did M&S announce how their trading performed over the Christmas period like other stores did? I'm having difficulty finding a reference to it.

You should have had your payment on the 13th
Not sure why iii can't get your payment on that date. Not heard the "Cheques in the post" excuse for a long time. You should have also received in the post some vouchers to use in store. In financial markets, I'm sure new systems are well tested before letting them go live. If the above are true, maybe it's time to look for someone else to use for your share trading. |

No I spoke to the admin team and they said that as there is a new system being put in place the payments are currently being sent by cheque to them. (GREAT, as the SP is now higher than last friday).

The big thing as far as I am concerned, is the increasing amount of overseas business. The UK business isnt going to grow much, but there is plenty of scope elsewhere in the world if the world wants it and it is done right. Pleased to say that the company seems to be doing the right thing.

Purely anecdotal. Went online for the sale and almost nothing to buyin menswear. Other half went to the Ken High St shop, same experience.

If i recall correctly last years results whilst not great were welcomed as being better than expected and progress on the year before... and last year had worse snowy/icy weather conditions disrupting delivery lorries and customers alike. Xmas day fell on a saturday. Whereas this year being closed on xmas day (Sunday) is not as bad for business as being closed on saturday. If the statement includes data for the sales then there may be some growth to report - I recall reading that M&S was opening 96 stores on boxing day which would not normally be trading. Throughout the economic downturn I am fairly sure that internet sales have been reported positively so I'd expect that to be the same again.
So I'm expecting M&S to be one of the more positive ones... but will probably be drowned out by negativity from other retailers. |

I don't think you can read across from HMV because that is a business which is having its market completely restructured by online delivery. Clearly there is no future for their type of high street operation.
On the other hand I do think the figures are likely to be disappointing because it is generally quiet on the high street and even if Christmas sales are ok the trend since seems likely to be negative. |

Crucial to any retailer is whether it overstocked. On the evidence of the sale, it didn't.

Having read the headlines of HMV it looks it is poor with loss in sales of 8% and if you take the increase in VAT that figure is even higher.
At Morrisons its the same story with claim for revenue growth of 0.7% and a claim of additional 800,000 extra customers through their doors. MKS is what we want to know but the general feeling is with better weather, increase in prices and increased vat it should be better than last year but somehow i doubt it . If growth is not achieved then the market will reduce the p/e ratio to around 10 instead of 12 with. reduced eps on that basis it is around the figure already. |

We will have a trading statement on Tuesday for what its worth.
Last year group sales were up by 4% which was good considering the awful weather conditions. This year it Could be anywhere between + or - 4%. I think the results could be poor because Waitrose has grabbed a very high proportion of growth at the expense of MKS i would assume. Next and MKS will be similar on the clothing front because neither have "must have products" to generate ward robe changes. MKS on the other hand has eye watering price rises which could help the bottom line but it will not show up in the trading statement as regards profits. |

Although retail news has been doom and gloom I expect Christmas results to be fairly good for M & S. The weather has been very mild this Christmas and I thought the post Christmas sales would also show strong results.
M & S tend to be one of the first to delivery Christmas results which, I think, normally happens around the 5th of Jan. |

I have been watching the M&S internet site and (from the general offering, customer reviews and sizes sold out etc.) I have formed the view that internet trade has been very good.
And further --- this aspect of M&S trading has strong potential into the future. Has anyone got a view on this?? Also when is the Christmas trading statement due?? . Please. |

I'm not sure it is entirely valid to compare M&S/Waitrose with Aldi/Lidl. They serve totally different market segments with the former being based on quality and the latter competing on price.
Personally I find local LIDL stores to be depressing to shop in, and their stock, whilst usually cheap, is never consistent. The store staff don't even seem to know in advance if something they previously stocked is likely to come back in, or when. Mind you M&S could do with some lessons on how to run cafes from some self-service cafe owners. Their layout is appallingly inefficient with the same staff heating food, mixing drinks then tilling up, causing large queues. GLTA CM |

M&S came fourth in a Which? report after Waitrose, Aldi and Lidl. That's the result of M&S going downmarket on customer service, quality and ambiance (piped music in all their stores now - yuk) but failing to follow through on price.

Sir Philip to sell/close 250ish stores over the next few years. Won't do MKS any harm. And he wanted to buy MKS didn't he?
I use Marks at Hedge End and it does me very well: great range, helpful staff, bright and airy; just got to watch out for the wheelchairs. I jest: lots of gear for the young these days. Never, ever, had a Marks sarny. I'll leave that for our EU (for now) colleagues. When mademoiselle starts buying M&S knickers, we'll really have arrived. We'll see. |

Considering the doom and gloom on the high street; with most retailers reporting hard times; I'd suggest these results are at the very top end.
