The chief executive of Prudential's UK division, Nick Prettejohn, has resigned from the insurer after failing to secure the position of group chief executive. The replacement for current group chief executive, Mark Tucker, will be the former head of Aviva's European arm, Tidjane Thiam. While Prudential would not be drawn on whether Prettejohn had another job, insiders claimed that he was still on good terms with both the directors and Thiam.
FRANCE IMPORTS UK ELECTRICITY AFTER HEATWAVE SHUTS DOWN POWER.
Britain is exporting significant amounts of electricity to France after the summer heatwave put one third of the country's nuclear reactors out of action. With temperatures in France soaring above 30 degrees Celsius this week, reactors at state-owned EDF are generating their lowest amount of electricity in six years, forcing the French producer to turn to Britain for additional supplies. A spokesman for National Grid said that electricity flows from Britain to France during peak periods yesterday were as high as 1,000 megawatts, which is roughly equivalent to the output of the Dungeness nuclear power plant on the Kent coast.

Private equity lender Intermediate Capital has raised 351 million pounds ($577.1 million) in a rights issue in order to take advantage of investment opportunities. The firm said that it had extended 395 million pounds of debt until 2013, and that the fundraising would allow it to participate in the refinancing of existing buyout transactions.

The latest accounts from The Children's Investment Trust reveal the activist hedge fund saw its annual profits leap to 555.9 million pounds immediately prior to the start of the credit crunch. The 73 per cent rise also resulted in a doubling of controlling partner and founder Chris Hohn's pay to 1.7 million pounds. Hohn, who is thought to have donated his pay to TCI's charity, claimed that the potential for future profitability remains but urged caution, stating: 'Current market conditions will have a material impact on the income stream of the partnership over the following 12 months'.
DOMINO'S SPOTS A TASTY TAX OPPORTUNITY

Pizza delivery chain Domino's has acquired a business leasing unit from investment bank Dresdner Kleinwort. The unit, Dresdner Kleinwort Leasing March (2) Limited, primarily leases office equipment and vehicles to multinational corporations. Leasing structures were popular with businesses during the 1980s and 1990s, but they have become less common in recent years due to changes in the way which they are treated by tax authorities. Mike Warburton, a tax partner at Grant Thornton, said, "It is a real throwback to the old days when companies entered into leasing contracts in order to obtain the tax write-offs."

FSA DIVISIONS IN 'RADICAL' OVERHAUL

The Financial Services Authority is to undergo a restructuring which will see the creation of two new divisions. Under the changes, which will take effect in October, an international division will be created and tasked with significantly increasing the regulator's engagement with its foreign counterparts. The Authority's financial stability team will also be turned into a fully-realised department to examine macro-prudential issues. FSA chief executive Hector Sants believes that the move will complete the 'radical internal reforms' which he initiated in response to the credit crisis.

ESPN and BSkyB are soon expected to announce a joint bid to screen the next four years of Scottish Premier League football matches. The broadcasting giants are thought to be close to formalising an offer for a broadcasting rights package which was clawed back from Setanta Sports shortly before the group's collapse. The joint bid will come as a disappointment to the SPL, which hoped to trigger an auction between the two broadcasters. Although Setanta had initially agreed a four-year, 125 million pound deal, market insiders say that the joint bid is likely to value the rights package at only 85 million pounds.

Tesco is expected to face protests over its treatment of migrant workers at its annual general meeting in Glasgow on Friday. The trade union Unite claims that some the of retailing giant's meat and poultry suppliers are primarily staffed by agency employees - usually migrants who are paid less than permanent indigenous staff. Unite is to table a shareholder resolution which will call for corrective action.
MOULTON'S CURE FOR THE MELTDOWN
Veteran private equity boss Jon Moulton has called on the government to cut public spending in order to promote a long-term economic recovery. The founder and managing partner of Alchemy Partners warned: "Unless we have dramatic action, we're doomed to low growth, no growth, or going slightly downwards . countries can't manage public debt at 100 per cent of GDP for very long." He added: "You can't pretend we can do it with the frivolous stuff . the magnitude of the cuts we need will cut into core programmes and affect sections of the population quite adversely." However, he did acknowledge that the worst of the credit crunch is over, and that the economy is now on a 'slight upward swing'.

ARGOS OWNER PLANS 150 PER CENT CASH BONUSES FOR DIRECTORS.
Investors have sharply criticised Home Retail Group for proceeding with a plan to offer directors massive cash bonuses against the wishes of 35.7 per cent of shareholders. The owner of Homebase and Argos intends to award some managers up to one and a half times their salary in cash, with others eligible to receive a package of shares and cash equal to 450 per cent of their salary. Peter Montagnon, director of investment affairs at the Association of British Insurers, said that many investors were angry at how the company's board had dealt with executive pay. However, the company defended the scheme, saying that the changes will result in a better-balanced package of incentives.

Profits at Gordon Ramsay's chain of restaurants have fallen by nearly 90 per cent, resulting in the celebrity chef being forced to pump millions of pounds of his own money into the business. Accounts filed with Companies House show that profits at the chain fell from 3.05 million pounds in 2007 to only 383,325 pounds last year, despite a cash injection of five million pounds by Ramsay and his business partner Chris Hutcheson. The fall in profits was blamed on over-ambitious expansion plans and the closure of the Savoy Grill and the Connaught, two of his key London restaurants.

Suffolk-based brewing and pub group Greene King has announced that this year's unusually hot summer is providing respite from what had otherwise been 'one of the toughest trading environments for a generation'. In the eight weeks to the end of June, the firm's managed pub arm saw sales growth of 5.2 per cent, while sales at Belhaven, its market-leading Scottish business, enjoyed a 10.2 per cent rise. However, the good news was not shared by the group's tenanted pub operations, where sales remained flat. Shares in the firm rose 2.99 per cent to close at 422.25 pence following the trading update.
