There is a program tonight on Radio 4 ( file on four ) about the subject of high frequency trading which may be of interest to some.

It involves high speed, aggressive trading algorithms running on fast computers co located near the exchanges to reduce transmission times and grab the business first. It also allows manipulation of the prices with respect to other traders with less sophisticated hardware.

It will no doubt cover the practice of flash orders which are the subject of some considerable criticism and look to be banned by the exchanges themselves.
