	AB - you may well be right from a trend perspective. i was indeed taking a long term and 'investor' perspective. vc is committed to rigorous cost control whilst maintaining infrastructure investment. further he is deterrmined to grow dividends. spain seems to have bottomed, italy is showing strength, iphone for uk in 2010, susbstantial non-uk earnings(very important due to gbp) etc etc having said that vod does have its problems but in my view there is at least 25% upside from current levels good luck More \| View thread (3) \| Respond \| Login to Vote up \| Login to Vote down

	"Questor says BUY " ------ From a >>very<< long investment point of view that might prove to be true. From a trading point of view this stock is still deciding where it wants to go. Should it break below ~131.5, then the trend will be down. So at this stage it's better to wait for a confirmation before jumping on the horse. "Smartphones continued to REPRESENT THE FASTEST-GROWING SEGMENT of the mobile devices market and we REMAIN CONFIDENT about the POTENTIAL FOR SMARTPHONES in the fourth quarter of 2009 and in 2010," said Carolina Milanesi, a Gartner analyst, in a statement. Gartner said that verall, 41 million smartphones were purchased by end users in the third quarter. Nokia was the top seller in the period, grabbing 39% of sales, Gartner said. Research in Motion accounted for 21% of smartphone sales during the period, its highest quarterly share yet, while iPhone maker Apple Inc. was third with 17% of sales. Gartner predicted that iPhone sales should be STRONG AGAIN in the FOURTH QUARTER as Apples starts selling it in CHINA and 16 OTHER COUNTRIES. Apple sold about 7 million iPhones in the third quarter. The overall mobile phone market grew by only 0.1% during the third quarter, when 308.9 million devices were sold. Nokia led the way in the overall mobile phone market as well, accounting for 36.7% of sales, a slight decline from its year-earlier share of 38%. Nokia was followed by Samsung's 19.6% share, LG's 10%, Motorola's 4.5% and Sony Ericsson's 4.3%. Milanesi said Gartner EXPECTS the OVERALL MOBILE PHONE MARKET to GROW in the FOURTH QUARTER, citing NEW DEVICES INTRODUCED for the Christmas sales season and NEW INCENTIVE PROGRAMS from carriers. Nonetheless, she predicted that sales for the full year will likely be flat compared to 2008. IDC also tracks the mobile phone and smartphones markets, but uses a somewhat different measurement than Gartner, counting shipments by manufacturers to carriers and other retailers rather than sales to end users. Thus, IDC's research found that some 287 million MOBILE PHONES were shipped during the third quarter, down 6% from a year earlier. 	If you are short on a stock with a CFD your position benefits because of the price drop due to the ex-dividend status. To take account of this your account is debited immediately. When you are long the opposite happens, you get credited with the dividend. Obviously with short positions if the value of the contract isn't adjusted immediately a trader could take advantage of this, i.e close the trade and disappear. In the case of long positions the trader could be made to wait to collect the benefit of the dividend but I guess to be consistent it is credited on the ex-dividend date. 	Hi Hold the shares (long) via a CFD account. The pay date for the divi is Feb 2010. However, I received the divi this morning. I'm not complaining (helps towards the christmas fund!!), but am curious as to why this is. Could anyone enlighten me? Thanks!! 	/ "Vodafone PROFIT RISES; Doubles Target for Cost Cuts" Nov. 10 (Bloomberg) -- Vodafone Group Plc, the world's LARGEST MOBILE-PHONE COMPANY, posted a 2.9 percent RISE in first-half operating profit and said it PLANS to CUT COSTS by an ADDITIONAL 1 BILLION POUNDS ($1.66 billion). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, in the six months ended Sept. 30 rose to 7.46 billion pounds, matching the average of analysts’ estimates, from 7.24 billion pounds a year earlier. "The declines in organic service revenues and profitability show that the company is still on the back foot and too dependent on the sluggish European business," said Morten Singleton, an analyst at Collins Stewart in London. "AGGRESSIVE COST CUTS are the RIGHT THING TO DO, but the market was expecting these cuts." SALES in the half ADVANCED 9.3 percent to 21.76 billion pounds, the company said in an e-mailed statement today. Colao said Vodafone's 1 BILLION-POUND COST-REDUCTION PROGRAM will be delivered a YEAR AHEAD OF SCHEDULE and that the company plans a FURTHER 1 BILLION POUNDS OF COST SAVINGS by 2012. In Europe, service revenue excluding currency swings and acquisitions dropped by 4.5 percent, "reflecting the economic and competitive environment," Vodafone said. That compares with a slide of 3.2 percent in Africa and Central Europe. Growth in Africa was offset by declines in Turkey and Romania. Vodafone said it still FORECASTS ADJUSTED OPERATING PROFIT in the year ending March to be between 11 billion pounds and 11.8 billion pounds. It said cash before license and spectrum payments will be around the upper end of a range of 6 billion pounds to 6.5 billion pounds. "The group has performed in line with our expectations and we have made STRONG PROGRESS WITH OUR STRATEGIC PRIORITIES, in particular in mobile data and cash generation," Colao said. In the ASIA PACIFIC and MIDDLE EAST REGION, SERVICE REVENUE GAINED 18 percent, helped by INDIA where SERVICE REVENUE ROSE about 21 percent as the company added 14.1 million clients. Profitability, based on Ebitda, declined by 3.1 percentage points in the Asia Pacific and Middle East region, "reflecting lower margins in India caused by the pricing environment and investment in new circles, and star-up costs in Qatar." Colao told reporters on a conference call that INDIA will continue to be an "ATTRACTIVE" market for Vodafone although "the competitive intensity will remain there until consolidation." Bharti Enterprises Pvt., which controls India’s largest mobile-phone company, on Oct. 29 predicted MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS will reduce the number of mobile-phone companies in the country as there are "TOO MANY" operators. Vodafone bought a majority stake in Hutchison Essar Ltd., now called Vodafone Essar, for $10.7 billion in May 2007. Vodafone Essar is India's THIRD-LARGEST MOBILE-PHONE COMPANY. Colao, a former McKinsey & Co. partner, is PUSHING MANAGERS to SQUEEZE MORE PROFIT from EXISTING OPERATIONS. Earlier this year, he agreed to merge an Australian unit with Hutchison Telecommunications Ltd.'s operation in the country, where growth prospects are slim. 	agreed. but the 12 trillion they have put in has to be given back, just like the 2.4 trillion here. it all seems as though they want to save egg on their faces at any cost. they may have halted the rot and may have ensured the lows are not reached again but we will stagnate at best for a long time before any gains can be had. thing is, all these trillions and we are only just hanging on. more of the same will perhaps put us all back on track, but then the bill arrives and we are all 15% worse off having to pay for it, and back where we started. i think that post xmas a 20% drop will come and the next quarters results will show how badly we are or conversely that we are doing just about ok. bp, vod, ng, azn, gks etc will be good share to have then. i just cant see any good news coming.
