CHICAGO, April 23 (Reuters) - Package delivery company United Parcel Service Inc took more than half of Deutsche Post AG unit DHL's U.S. domestic package business during the first quarter, a top executive said on Thursday.
"We captured a little more than half of DHL's U.S. business, with the rest split up between our competitors," Chief Financial Officer Kurt Kuehn said in a conference call with analysts.
DHL shut down its U.S. domestic service at the end of January with the loss of 9,500 jobs. The company blamed the decision on the U.S. recession and the Herculean task of trying to take on UPS and FedEx Corp on their home turf.
