Shares of Sequenom Inc plummeted in premarket trading on Thursday, dropping after it said employee mishandling of research and development test data and results had forced it to delay the launch of a Down Syndrome test.

The maker of genetic analysis products also forecast 2009 revenue below Wall Street consensus estimates.

U.S. index futures rose on Thursday, following the release of quarterly results from such companies as Procter & Gamble and Dow Chemical , which cheered investors and stoked optimism that the economic slump was showing signs of easing.

Federal investigators who are looking into possible accounting violations at Freddie Mac are raising questions about whether the government-backed mortgage company improperly delayed recording billions of dollars of losses, according to a late Wednesday report on the Wall Street Journal.

A confidential February 2008 report by the investigative firm Kroll concluded that "inappropriate application" of accounting rules "enabled Freddie to defer billions of dollars of losses incurred from 2001 through 2004" on derivative contracts whose value depends on fluctuations in interest rates, the paper wrote, citing people involved with the matter.

Cell phone company Motorola Inc on Thursday reported a first-quarter loss that widened from the prior year and sales that were lower than expected.

The company also forecast a narrower loss for its second quarter and said it plans to further cut costs.

Shares rose 3.2 percent to $6.15 in premarket trade.

Consumer products company Procter & Gamble reported third-quarter earnings that edged 4 percent lower from the prior year, and sales that were down 8 percent.

The company said that while it expects its full-year profit to be in line with expectations, its sales could be weaker than its previous forecast.

Shares of the Dow component rose 1.6 percent to $51.25 in premarket trade on light volume.

Bondholders will present an alternative to General Motors's recently launched debt-for-equity exchange, in a deal that would swap a stake of 51 percent in a restructured company for $27 billion in debt, according to a person familiar with the plan.

The new plan would give the United Auto Workers union 41 percent in a new GM while the U.S. government wouldn't receive an equity stake, according to the source.
