U.S. stock market report 1039 ET 27July2009-Pacer to sell unit to Universal Truckload ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Transportation and logistics provider Pacer International Inc said it has entered into an agreement to sell its specialized, heavy-haul trucking business to Universal Truckload Services Inc for an undisclosed sum.

Pacer said Universal Truckload will assume two real property leases and equipment leases for tractors and trailers used in the operation, along with customer, contractor and agent lists.

Shares of Pacer gained 2.7 percent to $1.90 while Universal Truckload eased back to $14.45, off one cent from Friday's closing price.

FBR Capital Markets upgraded Ensco International Inc and Rowan Companies Inc, and said a sharp increase in jackup tender activity suggested that the market was nearing a bottom.

Analyst Robert MacKenzie said he expects utilization in the global jackup fleet to stabilize toward the end of the year as there were increased customer inquiries for jackup work.

Ensco was upgraded to "outperform" while Rowan was lifted to "market perform."

Webster Financial Corp shares jumped more than 17 percent to $11.27 on Monday after the company said private equity firm Warburg Pincus agreed to invest $115 million in the company through a direct purchase of newly issued common stock.

The largest bank in New England said Warburg would acquire 11.5 million shares from Webster at $10 per share.

The Dow Jones U.S. Coal index edged lower on Monday, after Alpha Natural Resources reported second-quarter earnings that fell more than 75 percent because of lower demand from power producers and steelmakers.

The stock fell 4.5 percent to $32.67 while the index slid 1.1 percent to 236.97.

In other coal sector news, International Coal Group shares rose 2.6 percent to $3.16 after it reported second-quarter earnings that beat expectations by a penny.

Stifel Nicolaus upgraded IAC/InterActiveCorp to "buy" from "hold," and said the probability of the Internet media company pursuing a "significant" share buyback program in the third or fourth quarter had increased.

"We believe the topic of share repurchases may be discussed as soon as on the company's second quarter earnings conference call on Wednesday morning," the firm wrote to clients.

Sales of new single-family homes in the United States rose more than expected in June, while the inventory of homes for sale fell to a more than 11-year low, government data showed on Monday.

Sales rose to an annual rate of 384,000 in June, the Commerce Department reported, up 11 percent from May, while the number of new homes for sale fell to 281,000, the lowest since February 1998.
