MILAN, Sept 30 (Reuters) - Mediaset SpA described as "baseless" a Spanish newspaper report that the Italian broadcaster was interested in taking a stake in Telecom Italia SpA.
Spain's El Economista reported Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was interested in taking a stake in the phone company via Mediaset, the country's biggest broadcaster.
However, Berlusconi would only make the move if it did upset Telecom Italia shareholder Telefonica SA, it said, citing sources "related" to Telecom Italia.
"These are baseless press reports," a Mediaset spokesman said on Wednesday.
Mediaset was down 0.88 percent at 4.81 euros at 0950 GMT. Telecom Italia was flat at 1.22 euros.
