UBS on Wednesday raised its 2009 and 2010 profit view on the S&P 500 index , citing a stronger-than-expected U.S. and global economy.

The firm also cited corporate earnings surprises, driven by productivity gains and cost-cutting measures.

"The earnings surprise pattern is the best we have seen since at least 1990," the brokerage said and raised its third-quarter profit view to $16.70 from $16.15.

U.S. stocks opened higher on Wednesday, after better-than-expected economic data from China and comments from Federal Reserve officials on continued low interest rates buoyed investors' appetite for riskier investments.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 47.76 points, or 0.47 percent, to 10,294.73. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index gained 6.43 points, or 0.59 percent, to 1,099.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 14.63 points, or 0.68 percent, to 2,165.71.

IESI-BFC on Wednesday agreed to buy Waste Services Inc in an all-stock deal worth about $370 million.

Under the terms of the agreement, IESI-BFC will issue 0.5833 common share of IESI-BFC for each Waste Service common share held. Waste Service shareholders will own about 23 percent of the combined company following the close of the deal.

Shares of Waste Services rose 1.5 percent to $7.35 in premarket trading.

U.S. stock index futures were up on Wednesday, as better-than-expected economic data from China signaled that the country had put the worst of the global economic crisis behind it.

In addition, comments from Federal Reserve officials on continued low interest rates buoyed investors' appetite for riskier investments.

At least two brokers started coverage on Education Management Corp on Wednesday, with Barclays rating the company "overweight" and BMO Capital Markets rating it "market perform."

Barclays wrote that the company was positioned for superior growth compared with its peers.

BMO said that as the bulk of the education company's enrollment was in bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs spread across a wide variety of verticals, the company may be less counter cyclical than many others in the sector.

The stock rose 3.5 percent to $23.10 in premarket trading.
