    MARKET SNAPSHOTS

  • Malaysia's benchmark index fell 0.1 percent on Wednesday, with financial firm AMMB down 2.4 percent and telecoms firm Maxis up 1.9 percent.
  • U.S. stocks rose in light trading volume on Wednesday, supported by data that pointed to stabilization in the labor and housing markets, areas that have fed concerns about a "double dip" recession.
  • Crude oil prices settled near $78 a barrel on Wednesday, supported by lower-than-expected builds in U.S. oil inventories last week, a weak U.S. dollar and gains on Wall Street.

  • Malaysian crude palm oil scored 15-week highs on Wednesday, supported by speculation rainy weather will hit output, but ended back from those highs on slowing export growth as reported by cargo surveyors.

  • The Philippine peso led Asian currencies higher on Wednesday against a broadly weaker dollar, while Vietnam's central bank surprised the market by announcing its third currency devaluation since mid-2008.
  • Vietnam's stock market hit a three-month low on Wednesday after the central bank raised interest rates and devalued the currency but Thailand rose nearly 3 percent on relief an anti-government protest was postponed.
