DUBLIN, Nov 30 (Reuters) - A member of Ireland's parliament withdrew his support from Prime Minister Brian Cowen's Fianna Fail party on Monday, in a fresh blow to Cowen's already razor-thin majority just before he presents an austerity budget.
James McDaid, a Fianna Fail member who has been calling for an early parliamentary election, wrote on Monday to the government chief whip to say he might be going against the government in future lower house votes.
"I feel compelled to inform you that I have withdrawn my support from Fianna Fail," McDaid said in the letter seen by Reuters.
"My views on a general election are well known," he said. "I believe it would be in the interest of Fianna Fail and by extension in the interest of the country."
