Imperial College, University of London, has been working in collaboration with ValiRx and is currently carrying out the late pre-clinical development of ValiRx's lead therapeutic, VAL101 with funding awarded from the Eurostars scheme. In September 2011 a young Harlequins Rugby League academy player Jack Brennan was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer.

Having suffered with numbness in his neck and shoulders for months, which he put down to an injury, Jack now faces a fight against a Cancer which has now spread throughout his body and is inoperable in its present form.

Jack started a course of chemo & radiotherapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the doctors are hoping it will reduce the tumours enough to operate!

Like many small cap stocks on the Alternative Investment Market, shares in vet supplies and pet care group Animalcare (LON:ANCR) were hit hard by the impact of volatile investor sentiment this summer. Nevertheless, the stock has since rebounded and with news of a strong performance last year, chief executive Stephen Wildridge is confident that the company can continue to outperform its peers in the coming 12 months.

Animalcare splits its operations into three divisions – Licensed Veterinary Medicines, Companion Animal ID, which includes microchips and insurance, and, finally, other products such as theatre equipment and infusion accessories. Last September, the group sold its non-core agricultural supplies business in order to focus on the growth opportunities in veterinary pharmaceuticals and pet supplies. Despite operating in a market that witnessed very little growth last year, Animalcare still managed to drive up revenues by 5.4% to £11.8m, with underlying pre-tax profits from continuing operations up 21.0% to £3.0m. Cash balances stood at around £1.2 million at the year end and the company paid a total dividend of 4p, up by 1p on last year.

The upcoming Stockopedia PRO investor toolkit shows Animalcare to have grown normalised revenues and earnings per share by 8.5% and 5.3% compounded over the last 5 years, with analysts at Brewin Dolphin and Edison Investment Research apparently expecting a consensus 10% further growth in EPS over the next rolling 12 months. The company has grown its operating margins to almost 25% and return on equity to almost 15% in recent years which are extremely high in comparison to its sector and the market as a whole. The company boasts a good financial health trend (Piotroski score of 8) with little to no net debt and no red flags in our system over the accounts. Income investors will note the company’s progressive dividend policy which has provided 17% compounded growth of dividends in the last five years, up to a forecast yield of 2.63%.

While the company is giving a good fundamental picture, it does appear relatively fully valued at these levels, with a normalised P/E higher than the database average and a PEG of 1.5. The share price has been extremely volatile of late, including a near 30% decline in the market weakness, but it has bounced back strongly to show positive relative strength against the stock market on almost all timeframes with an 85% outperformance on a 12 month basis. The stock trades 9% off its highs at a capitalisation of £30m.

In an interview with Stockopedia, Animalcare’s Stephen Wildridge and marketing director Ian Menneer, explained how the company managed to outperform its sector peers last year.

Stephen, Animalcare outperformed its own market last year so why was growth in the animal health sector generally flat?

Stephen Wildridge: I think it is a reflection of the general economic climate as much as anything else. I think the British public still retains its love and devotion to its pets but as a pet dies, and things are maybe a little bit tight, you don’t get the new cat or the new dog or the new puppy, or whatever it may be. Also, in the discretionary spend area, you think about it just a little bit before you maybe buy that lead or that collar or get a microchip done. So I think it is just the general economic uncertainty.

When you reflect on the sale of the agricultural supplies business, presumably you see that as a very well executed decision.

Stephen Wildridge: We are all from the veterinary side of the business and we knew what the potential for the vet business was; that’s the beauty of our business, we can see relatively clearly what is going to happen in the next 12 to 24 months in respect of our products. Launch of Two New Generic Veterinary Medicines

Animalcare Group plc ("the Group" or "Animalcare"), a leading supplier of veterinary medicines, announces the addition of two new products to its range of licensed pharmaceuticals having received approval from the Veterinary Medicines Directorate and the Irish Medicines Board on 27(th) April 2011.

The new products, Sedastart and Sedastop, complement Animalcare's existing range of analgesia and anaesthesia products to provide a more complete product suite and can be used alongside Buprecare, the Group's leading analgesic used on dogs and cats. The launch of Sedastart and Sedastop follows the successful launches of Cephacare, Buprecare and Benazecare in the UK and on mainland Europe. The net turnover for the target markets of Sedastart and Sedastop is approximately GBP1.0million in each segment.

Sedastart is a sedative solution administered to dogs and cats by injection and is used prior to a general anaesthetic or minor procedures such as stitching, radiography and nail clipping to calm the animal. Sedastop, also a solution administered by injection, is given to the animal following a procedure or operation to reverse the sedative effects of Sedastart and revive the patient more quickly. Sedastart and Sedastop can be used as either stand alone products or together.
