Bisichi disappoints, but prospects improve
Created: 26 April 2011 Written by: Nigel Bolitho
Six months ago, brokers were hoping for a second-half bounce back in profits at Bisichi's BlackWattle mine, 180km east of Johannesburg. However, lower coal prices and a severe shortage of railway trucks taking coal to the Richards Bay export depot firmly put pay to that and also led to an unacceptable build-up of stocks. Earnings were knocked further by the strength of the rand against the dollar.
But management have high hopes for 2011 and are maintaining the dividend. Coal production is building up again, with South African coal prices now around $120 per metric tonne against $85-95 last year. Rail issues have been largely solved or circumvented, strip ratios will be better and, possibly most important of all, Bisichi has found a new Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) partner. It's not the usual penniless local tribe, but Jo-Burg listed 'diversified financial services provider' Vunani who is taking a 37.5 per cent interest in the Black Wattle mine. As the mine only has a theoretical five-year life, Vunani's contacts to acquire other mining interests could be all important.

Re: Coal Price Spike

Yes, one would have thought that there would have been sme comment on the November interim mangement statement. There was good news on obtaining more coal stocks that are easier to work with, but on the other hand they were trading at a loss because of a shortage of rails trucks. If they are not careful they are going to miss the boat of peak coal prices. That said the price of coking coal should remain firm for a while. I could not understand the logic that mining from the new coal face would reduce the vulnerability to a shortage of rail trucks. In other words there seems to me to be quite a bit of uncertainty here and lack of control of destiny if the business model can get screwed up by a lack of rail trucks. That said once they get their act together again they should be able to make some good profits - (so long as the beligerant environmental lobby does not come in and mess things up like they did with CZA!!).

Share Buy Back

Hi all

I am new to BISI (Bought 2.5k worth 2 weeks ago)
Bought because fundamentals of company look good, and now Open cast should allow lower costs and higher production, although there may be some short term hurdles to jump.
Prepared to hold long term, hoping for commodity prices to eventually rise, but I am not sure what people think about prospects over the next 3 years.
I also assume there is still plenty of mine life also?

I was interested to read that the recent AGM passed a reolution allowing Share Buy back (this was not in last AGM notes). Is this something that will actually happen and therefore may boost the SP?
Thanks in advance for any replies. By sharegar777

Move to opencast

I've held BISI since Nov'05, 4.5 years, because it has ALWAYS looked undervalued. For some time I was even in profit, but their first mining fatality (back in 2008?) hammered the share price (look how it fell between Aug 2008 and May 2009) and it's never really got over it.

One thing I don't understand is the rationale for BISI's big investment in updating the mine after the accident and then, apparently, abandoning it all in favour of open-cast mining, as soon as they got the appropriate licenses. They must have known that the open-cast opportunity was in the wind. By samdauncey

Re: Any Analyst Info?

Also, I do pick up on your point that many shares have doubled this year (as well as many that have not). However, unfortunately, I was so exceptionally busy, I missed the rally as I have a day job to do (and during most of 2009, an evening and weekend job as well), so did not benefit from that. However, I am pleased to pick up on this share, as despite currently sitting about even, this has very strong growth potential over the forthcoming years, and I picked it as one to buy and tuck away, a little like GDWN. Since getting back into the market gradually from the end of September, I think this is one of the few of shares that has shown me little or no movement upwards - the rest are much better, and current return is around 42% in this period. I'm expecting this one to deliver sometime too.

Re: Any Analyst Info?

Look at another share I held some time back, Goodwin, (GDWN.L) and they display similar attributes to Bisichi i.e. small cap low trading volumes, wide spread etc. I bought them , and sold, literally at the top at 1400 in '08 around April I think (and yes, I know I got lucky with that one). I didn't find them at all dull, and in fact, very much enjoyed the relatively steep incline in that period. The fact that others didn't pick up on them is surprising and their loss - this is the definition of a true contrarian, not only able to pick up the undervalued shares, but also those that seem to be ignored by the wider market.
