Growth Investor-Miles Nolan..

Boomerang upbeat on future
28/09/2011 Miles Nolan
http://www.growthcompany.co.uk/news/1657908/boomerang-upbeat-on-future.thtml

Independent television producer Boomerang (BOOM) has delivered a robust set of results, driven by strong demand for its services.

In the year to May, pre-tax profits soared 91 per cent to £1.02 million, as sales increased 26 per cent to £26.9 million. Television programming hours jumped 54 per cent to a record 659 hours, however further out the focus is likely to be on chasing higher margin work.

The AIM listed firm has split its business into four operations. Other than a slowdown in programming from S4C, there should be plenty of scope to win new work - particularly in the area of Advertised Funded Programming (AFP). In this area Boomerang has secured contracts to deliver productions for Nissan, Quiksilver and the Sony Ericsson World Breakdancing Championships. It also completed two contracts for US media giant Disney.

Operating in a massively fragmented market worth £2.2 billion, there is plenty of scope for acquisitions. Earlier this year it acquired factual programming specialist Oxford Scientific Films and set up a 50:50 joint venture known as Harlequin Talent Agency to help harness talent.

Boomerang has spent £2.5 million over the last couple of years on buying state-of-the-art kit production kit, however much of the investment has now been completed. A restructuring effort meant moving its Fflic and Apollo operations to a new administrative head office, but this should yield useful cost savings. It has also rebranded its post-production arm to Gorilla - the team have worked on well known series' such as Bruce Parry's Amazon and Arctic as well as Grandpa in my Pocket and Whites.

Speaking to Growth Company Investor, chief executive Huw Eurig Davies said 'we are confident our diversification strategy into new areas will bring useful benefits to the group'. Recently appointed broker finnCap predicts 2011 pre-tax profits of £1.1 million and adjusted EPS of 8.8p. The shares are up 1p to 49.5p, but remain significantly undervalued - particularly given more than half its market cap is in cash. Strong buy.

Boom times for Boomerang
25/07/2011 Miles Nolan
http://www.growthcompany.co.uk/news/1643048/boom-times-for-boomerang.thtml

Independent television producer Boomerang Plus (BOOM) has issued an upbeat trading statement in which it confirms second half trading has surpassed expectations.

Cardiff based Boomerang provides content for a wide range of genres, including children's entertainment, sports and music. Results for the six months to November revealed a 84 per cent hike in sales to £16.3 million, as pre-tax profits jumped 68 per cent to £788,000.

At the time the AIM counter pointed to a first half weighting, however trading has been 'busier than anticipated', driven by organic growth in network commissions and advertiser funded productions. The recent acquisition of factual films specialist Oxford Scientific is also proving a useful addition.

The Soho firm was acquired for £516,250 last month, and is expected to be earnings enhancing in the year to May 2012. Not only does it broaden its expertise, but it will also help to divert additional work to its Wales operations, which have available capacity thanks to recent investment in new kit.

To complement its existing Boom Talent agency, Boomerang recently acquired a 50 per cent stake in the Harlequin Talent Agency - the firm behind the world's finest baritone Bryn Terfel, as well as a selection of high-profile individuals.

At the interim stage, if one were to strip out the cash for Oxford Scientific, Boomerang would be left with cash and cash equivalents of £3.2 million - or 36p a share. New broker finnCap has yet to issue forecasts but a pre-tax profit for the year to May 2011 (due to be reported in September) of over £1 million looks realistic, producing EPS in the region of 8p. The shares are up 4.5p to 55p this morning, but remain significantly undervalued. Buy.
Boomerang Plus (BOOM) [55.5p/£4.95 million]

Boomerang Plus, an AIM-listed media group, acquired the trade and certain assets and liabilities of Oxford Scientific for a cash consideration of £516,250. OSF is a London-based BAFTA & Emmy-award winning production company focused on history and science programs.

The acquisition will help Boomerang deliver its diversification strategy both in terms of its expanding geographic presence and customer base, as OSF caters to audiences in the States, UK and Australia. It also strengthens the resource base, as it provides the company access to an extensive back catalogue of programming and experience in exploiting programs globally.

Following the acquisition of Indus Films in October 2009, this move further solidifies the company's position in the factual genre.

Huw Davis, CEO of Boomerang Plus, observed that: "the acquisition allows us to build on the strong performance of our advertiser-funded programming business and the organic growth seen in network productions, and positions the company for long term growth." By SpikeyDT

Hi Duncan

Keep your beady eyes on AXS over the next few months. IMO, there's a bit of skullduggery going on. EGM on Tuesday to sign off Euro 20 million fundraising.

Once paperwork in place, I expect to see regular flow of positive news.

This could be a whopper.

Hi Duncan

Here's an article from the Guardian dated 31/12/09:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/dec/31/doctor-who-leads-welsh-regeneration

I also liked this bit from the CEO:

"We are very well positioned with good revenue visibility, a strong balance sheet and a market offering which is highly favoured by the regulatory environment. This provides an excellent platform for the next phase of the Group's growth."

particularly the "......a market offering which is highly favoured by the regulatory environment" bit.
