Following another record performance, wealth management group Brooks Macdonald (BRK) is to reward its shareholders with a 67% hike in the dividend to 15p a share.

When listing on AIM back in 2005 it had £315m under management however this is now up to £3bn - up 36% in the year to June. Over the same period sales jumped 49% to £52.2m as pre-tax profits increased 28% to £7.3m. The balance sheet is also looking strong with cash and liquid assets of £18.5m, worth 175p a share.

The improved performance was despite forking out £545,000 for a charge levied by the FSCC, due to the failings of firms that include Keydata and several bucket shops. In August it paid £1.56m for the investment management activities of regional law firm Clarke Wilmott - a move that has helped established a Taunton office and deliverd £120m of discretionary client assets.

Brooks acquired Braemar Group last year, which has proved to be a smart move. It now manages over £750m of property assets and has enabled Brooks to set up a new Funds Business that will work alongside three Braemar funds and a Structured Growth Fund.

Speaking to Growth Company Investor chief executive Chris Macdonald said 'the macro position remains poor, however stock selection is the name of the game.' He sees plenty of opportunities for further acquisitions, but the fit 'has to be right'. The advent of the Retail Distribution Review in 2013 is also expected to be a positive for Brooks.

Broker Collins Stewart remains a fan and predicts 2012 pre-tax profits of £8.3m and EPS of 57p. Despite the undoubted quality of the business, we continue to rate the shares as a hold due to their high rating, however they are a worth buying on weakness.

GECR

Brooks Macdonald HOLD

16/03/2011 Miles Nolan

Fast growing wealth manager Brooks Macdonald (BRK) has reported a solid set of figures, despite a higher than expected charge of £545,000 levied by the FSCC.

In common with its rivals, Brooks has been forced to stump up for the failings of firms such as Keydata and a number of bucket shops.

Founded in 1991 the AIM counter has grown its funds under management consistently, and in the six months to 31 December the figure increased by a useful 46% to £2.7bn (2009: £1.85bn).

Brooks relies on professional intermediaries to recommend its services, so the 25% uplift in introducers to 200 should help boost future growth.

Interim results confirm sales rose 53% to £25.1m as pre-tax profits stepped up 24% to £3.06m. Last year Brooks acquired fellow AIM listed wealth manager Braemar for £4m and though it chipped in a loss due to reorganisation costs, the business did increase its properties under management by £200m.

Brooks has over 2,500 clients with 42% of discretionary funds invested in SIPP's and the same percentage of account holders opting for medium risk investments.

New initiatives include a specialist funds business to be launched in the summer - this will have £130m under management by combining existing funds in the group.

The forthcoming Retail Distribution Review (RDR) will shake up distribution models in the industry but Brooks expects this to bring opportunities.

With £12.5m of net cash Brooks has significant headroom over its regulatory requirements of £2.5m, so further bolt-on acquisitions can be funded without recourse to shareholders.

Broker Collins Stewart has a 1250p share price target and has pencilled in 2011 profits of £7.4m and EPS of 48p.

Brooks floated in 2005 at 140p a share and has soared thanks to soaring profits.

The current rating is high, but deservedly so.

Reduce by GCI

By Robert Tyerman

Bespoke wealth manager Brooks Macdonald, whose attractions Growth Company Investor highlighted at 279.5p in 2009, is seeing growth across all parts of its business.

The provider of fee-based discretionary asset management and financial services for private clients and pension funds, with offices in London, Hampshire, Manchester, Tunbridge Wells and Edinburgh, recently unveiled finals to June that delighted on every level.

CEO Chris Macdonald reported 78% pre-tax profits growth to £5.7m, on revenues up 61% to more than £35m and from earnings up 70% to 38.1p, hiked total dividends from 5.5p to 9p. ‘Last year’, he explained, ‘we were pushing with a headwind. However, this time around, we benefited from a tailwind’.

Funds under management grew 57% to £2.186bn at ‘Brooks’, reflecting its robust model, consistent investment performance and new business generated alongside IFAs and professional introducers. Growth was achieved across all areas, from SIPPs, now representing 42% of funds under management, to private portfolios and the emerging managed portfolio service. The bulk was delivered organically, augmented by office openings, alliances inked with introducers and last year's Lawrence House acquisition.

Since year-end, Brooks has hit the acquisition trail again, buying Braemar, manager of over £500m of property and £45m in specialist funds, in a £4m deal, set to enhance earnings ‘over the medium term’. Longer-term, Macdonald sees the forthcoming Retail Distribution Review (RDR), which will shake-up the distribution models of most financial services firms, as ‘a huge positive’ for his business.

If you are yet to bank at least some gains, consider doing so now, with the shares swapping hands for almost 24 times historic earnings. But make sure you stay meaningfully invested, since further bountiful growth is on the way.

doesn't seem to be any reason why not:

"Brooks Macdonald share price has more than trebled over the past 18 months. Its first quarter results were extremely strong, with revenue, pre-tax profits and earnings per share all sharply higher. The company also begun paying dividends for the first time.

A statement released this morning reported this trend had continued. 'The group has benefited throughout the period from an encouraging and continuing inflow of new business. The group's results to 30 June 2010 will be ahead of market expectations.'"
