I looked only at the 1 year chart and didn't go any further back. I was aware that we were hitting all time highs and sustaining a bullish phase at a time of great volatility. I couldn't be bothered to caclculate any correlation figure but did think it was an interesting characteristic of this share - even if only for a short time. I do have confidence going forward.
Re: Correlation

Interesting Observation. On the whole it DOES correlate well to the wider market, as you would expect - the wider market reflects some kind of view of the economic health of the world, and Clarksons are dependent on economic world health to prosper, so you would expect it. However you are right since March (i.e. after their final results) the wider markets have fallen, whilst Clarkson has risen. I interpret this as being company specific, and that the results gave investors the confidence that CKN will prosper over the next 12 months irrespective of the larger scene.

Looking at the 5 year chart, we see broader correlation, except for the period at the latter end of 2008 where we see a similar pattern to the present one. In that instance, it over corrected late in the year (can't be bothered to check if that was due to the August Interims, or Nov Management Statement, or some other event.)

No complaints though. By Hardboy

Correlation

Anyone noticed how this share performs in relation to the wider market? I have been aware for some time that it does not follow the market at all and seems to be comparatively independent of market sentiment as a whole. This is very apparent since March 12 where it has gone in the opposite direction to the All share index. To me this is a further reason to hold as a component in a diversified portfolio apart from its other attributes as a value, income and growth company.
I've put a weak buy on this only because of the current volatile sentiment from which even CKN is not immune. By musker ron

"Continued economic uncertainty combined with the demand/supply imbalance across most markets creates a challenging backdrop to 2012.
Re: Shenanigans again

As you are aware I'm a great follower of the Baltic exchange dry index, and following the drop to around 650 back in January, it has risen just about every day, and now stands at an unimpressive 1150, a very long way short of great, but at least moving in the right direction for three months. This may have something to do with CKN's continuing rise up the chart (so I'm definitely not going to pick any up on the cheap!), and there does seem to be a very positive cash flow into the shares, so it can't all be down to spread bet covering and other market manipulations .... can it?

Shenanigans again

Massive spike in volume today with 1% of the total being traded en block.
~187000 shown as a sell at midday and about the same number in total showing as buys in separate blocks towards the end of the day. Looks similar to the scenario seen earlier in the year with one big seller and a number of new investors. Also noted that the spread tightened considerably today and we hit an all time high of 1403 at one point. Interesting. By musker ron

Still decent value

Not sure I would be so sniffy about these results. With a market cap of £215m, net cash of £70m, giving an enterprise value of £144m. Op profits of £31m means a multiple of 4.6 times.

Add to this a 2.6 times covered dividend.

All of this at a low point in the cycle means there must be upside one day.

Happy to hold and would buy more if it dips significantly for any reason. By Zouppy

Results

Had a quick skip through. My verdict - OK. Not sure how market will react.

Turnover pretty flat, exchange rates worked against CKN. Winning market share. A small increase in EPS is good & increased dividend is welcome. Strong balance sheet.

At 1300 the results give a PE of 9.7 & yield (well covered) 3.85%.

It's certainly not expensive at these levels, but neither do we have significant growth to drive the sp upwards.

My guess is the sp will hang around these levels, reacting to economic atmosphere rather than company news, unless they come out with anything meaty.

I think it's probably a share to buy on dips in the sp, take the dividend & sell on peaks in the sp; but it isn't going to make us rich quick. By Hardboy

Mention in Shares Magazine

I've been in here for over a year now, it was one of my first ever investments @£11.70 so ive not really seen any return as of yet. Shares Magazine has just tipped this though, as a BUY.

They think the end year results (8th of March) could prove positive results, partly due to the upbeat statement released earlier this year saying that profits will be ahead of expectations due to favourable exchange rates.

Maersk (MAERSK-B:CO) showed that contract volumes rose 11% year on year, so the magazine is hoping for similar results for CKN.

CKN is also underperforming the FTSE Inustrial Transport Indicies by about 15%.

Hope news next week is good!
