Plastic coating and filter supplier Filtrona got top marks on its half-year scorecard as the company delivered strong revenue and profit growth, improved profit margins, reduced debt and rewarded shareholders with a 10 per cent dividend increase.
Filtrona also announced the acquisition of Michigan-based industrial parts distributor Reid Supply, which chief executive Colin Day views as "an excellent addition to the Protection and Finishing Products (PFP) division". Filtrona will pay up to $32m (£19m) for the business.
The stand-out performer was the PFP division, which increased underlying revenues by over 17 per cent and operating margin by 2.3 percentage points to produce a 36 per cent surge in operating profit, to £19m. The business serves a broad base of customers with a rapid supply of primarily plastic products for protection and finishing applications in industries such as hydraulics, pneumatics, oil and gas and electrical controls. Mr Day was keen to point out the turnaround in the cigarette filter division, which reported revenue up 1 per cent to £102m, reversing a 4 per cent decline in the first quarter.
Filtrona also announced new five-year borrowing facility of £320m and, with net debt reduced by £9.3m to £81.5m, reflecting a 72 per cent rise in operating cash flow to £43m, the business has ample funding for further deals.
BofA Merrill Lynch upgraded full-year EPS forecasts by 5 per cent to 24.1p (from 21p in 2010).

Support services group Filtrona advanced 22.4p to 337.05p following slightly betterthan- expected interim results. Collins Stewart’s target price is 508p as the broker expects that under Colin Day’s management a much more profitable business will start emerging.

0659 GMT [Dow Jones] SABMiller's (SAB.JO) 4Q trading update reads as a consensus beat and look to be a strong set of numbers, says Investec Securities. Says volume growth in the quarter is ahead of median consensus with good performance relative to consensus in all regions. "We expect the announcement to be positive for the shares this morning," says Investec. However, broker notes that the stock remains close to the top of its trading range on prospective price-to-earnings ratio relative to both the FTSE 100 index and global brewing peer group, "so a decent amount of expectation is priced in." 0656 GMT [Dow Jones] Redrow's (RDW.LN) market update is good with trading continuing to improve, says Liberum Capital. Says that sales per outlet per week in the last 15 weeks are now running at 0.70 per week, an acceleration since the first six weeks of the year when sales rates were 0.65 per week. "The sales rate is circa 8% quicker than last year," it notes. Liberum adds the company now expects units to marginally increase this year, consistent with the broker's estimates of 2,600 against 2,587 last time. Retains a hold rating. 0650 GMT [Dow Jones] Tesco's (TSCO.LN) outlook statement comes across as sensible and honest, says Nick Bubb at Arden Partners. Says that at first glance, the underlying pretax profit figure looks good, but it does include property disposals profits. Ex-property the pretax profit number looks a tad below par, says Bubb. Says Tesco Asia profit of GBP570 million is strong, although Tesco UK trading profits are only up 4%, which even Tesco thinks is not good enough. Having underperformed the market by 8% since the FY '10 results, says Jupiter's outperformance in its interim management statement is "fair". Assets-under-management of GBP24.45B in the 1Q are better than expected, says Deutsche Bank, due entirely to the 5% rebound in the FTSE All-Share since Jupiter's FY results in March. However, says there are some negatives in the interim statement, namely lower-than-expected flows into mutual funds and hedge funds and investment underperformance across Jupiter's mutual funds in 1Q '11. 0648 GMT [Dow Jones] Rolls-Royce's (RR.LN) $65 million contract award from PetroChina (PTR), the largest oil and gas producer in China, is encouraging news and shows the company increasing it's market share in the gas compression equipment sector, says Atif Latif, trader with Guardian Stockbrokers. Rolls-Royce is to provide PetroChina with six RB211 gas turbine compressor packages. "We now look for similar deals from PetroChina to be awarded," Latif says, noting that more contract wins are evidence that confidence has returned to the company.
