Goals reports HMRC update

Goals reports HMRC update
http://www.growthcompany.co.uk/news/1633993/goals-reports-hmrc-update.thtml

01/07/2011 Ben Jaglom

Five-a-side football centre operator Goals Soccer Centres (GOAL) has issued atrading update in which it notes that due to a dispute with HMRC, it expects sales and profits to be reduced by £650,000.

The dispute concerns the VAT rate on block bookings by teams playing their league fixtures, with HMRC arguing that all income related to commercially operated sports leagues should be standard rated for VAT purposes. Goals' lawyers argue otherwise and the company notes that it is appealing the decision by HMRC.

Aside from the tax dispute, like-for-like sales are up three per cent over the six months to 30 June, though the impact of the VAT argument 'has resulted in overall like for like sales being flat.' Furthermore Goals insists that 'the company remains on track and within budget to open four new centres during the year' having recently opened a centre in Hull this May.

Following the announcement analysts at Numis updated their forecasts. The broker is pencilling in pre-tax profits of £10.1 million on turnover of £32.6 million for the year to December 2011. In 2012 it sees profits climbing to £11.4 million on sales of £36.6 million. EPS of 14.2p and 16.2p are forecast for 2011 and 2012, respectively.

Shares in Goals were recommended by Growth Company Investor last September at 140p and currently trade at 123p having fallen 5.63p today. The news concerning the dispute with HMRC is likely to disappoint shareholders, but even assuming they fail in their appeal it does little to change its long-term prospects. We think the group has further long-term upside and therefore reiterate our buy/hold rating.

Not got significant property value according to management. Leasehold typically in out of town locations. Principally an earnings play. Profits at mature sites are typically £0.5m with turnover of £0.8m+ vs build cost of £2.5m to £3.5m. Yield should be attractive it's just a matter of access to capital and continuing to take on further debt. They have had 2 bad Winters in a row in terms of lost days.
Re: STOCKS WATCH

In many ways this article presents a balanced case, but the debt, over-expansion and austerity points are the ones that strike me as most salient. This is a highly speculative share and frankly it wouldn't surprise me if by 2012/13 it wasn't in real trouble and even receivership if the banks can't won't support it. The one big upside is the appointment of Philip Burks as a non-exec, with his excellent track record and savvy eye for the property market. I wonder what attracted him to the company? Does Goals have some hidden value in its property assets? By posinvest

Re: Good story

It is amazing how investors make their decisions based on rumour and the antics of the directors in the market place. It always seems to be assumed that if the directors are buying their own company's shares, then they must know something and the share must go up. Often, however, such buying is merely a strategy to try to force up the price in the short term so the directors can get out at a profit and while there is no evidence that this is the reason for buying in this case the financials do not look good. What is happening here is that (based on the latest accounts) revenue is growing at the rate of 3%, but to achieve this feeble growth the company is heavily (for its size) investing in property and equipment, so that when interest is taken out the profits available to shareholders are declining. In other words, profit per unit must be declining at a fair rate of knots. Based on information to date, at the current price of 115.5p the shares are trading on a P/E of 6.4 (cash basis) indicating that negative growth is built into the share price. This would be just about right if we were looking at normal risk, but with net borrowings (30 June 2010) at £43.8m exceeding the value of the equity and this share being on AIM we are facing high risks. Accordingly a fair price would be in the 80p to 90p range, so that buyers were paying a price that reflects the risks, the largest one being that all the investment being pumped in does not stimulate sufficient growth to justify such investment which results in the company's banks getting nervous, especially when they (the banks) realise they have not got any cash themselves having paid out huge bonuses on unrealised profits. This share is being touted about, without justification in my view. By numberbiter

Oh dear Sir Rodney Walker buying more shares, definitely time to sell!! On a more serious note the appointment of Philip Burks as a non-exec is good news and I've heard rumours that he is being lined up to succeed Walker, who is definitely damaged goods. Burks has a very good track record and would be an excellent, strategically astute Chairman, which Walker is very much not.
Weather, recession and the business model are all short to medium term problems. Expansion has also been premised on overly optimistic assumptions. As far as the institutions are concerned, remember Sir Rodney Walker was Chairman of Archial, which recently went into administration, and he is seriously damaged goods. Also kicked out of the Chair of Spice as I understand it, since when it's gone on to better things by being acquired! I followed the lead of Archial directors and bought a couple of times when they bought; in fact their buying (including Sir R's buys at over £100k) would have been better treated as a sell signal! Avoid this share at least until clarity of strategy and new leadership By posinvest
