I WAS expecting an upturn, I WAS expecting someone to get their finger out and turn things around, and I WAS hoping the new chief exec would propose something concrete, but all I see is wishful thinking and there have been so many false dawns I am writing these shares off as a bad loss.
Hopefully one day they will pick up and we will all make some money out of this investment but I'm sorry, I simply can't see it happening in the next few years under the current model.
surely the fact you bought these shares means you are also predicting an upturn? so now I am bemused as to why you bought them? everyone here is expecting an upturn that's why we bought them. The problem is nobody has a crystal ball so they fall short on any predictions, it's not malice or an attempt to foll anyone, it's just the nature of investing and then airing your thoughts in public!

PS I think it's a screaming orgasmic buy right now!

I'm just offering my opinion.
Some people are optimists, some are pessimists.
Most on here seem to be optimists, so I thought it would be nice to inject a touch of pessimism/realism into proceedings. For balance, you see?
I'd like nothing more than these shares taking off and making me richer, but I find myself bemused by how often an upturn is predicted.

Earthly, at these prices Tindle must be well past tempted and on his way to cant-help-himself. Now he is up to 8% he really needs to negotiate the aquisition of one of the other bigger block holdings to show some serious intent.

Personally, I'd also think he'd be more likely to do it if he had an obvious successor in his own buisness, especially a close family member, which I believe I am right in saying he does not. You could then make a legacy argument to add to his motivation to preserve local newspapers.

That said, his JPR holding is growing for a reason and if he turns out to be our WB I won't be complaining at all. By sixder

I particularly like the following;

Announcing his latest purchase Buffett said: "In towns and cities where there is a strong sense of community, there is no more important institution than the local paper. The many locales served by the newspapers we are acquiring fall firmly in this mold, and we are delighted they have found a permanent home with Berkshire Hathaway."

Those words will not have been ignored, this side of the pond...for that matter..hopefully WB may even at his venerable age..may decide to look further afield.

We also have a shareholder of a similar age who shares WB's forward thinking. what a platform to own...for someone with deep pockets.

The current SP would value the company around the price that JPR paid for the Irish title..put like that...even with current debt...we must ripe for a t/o....talk about being in play ! IMO

Re: positive update

Maybe because it's very poorly-run company with virtually no interest in producing decent newspapers - or indeed websites, and today's results offer very little hope for the future.

Partnerships such as the one announced today with motors.co.uk simply represent JP's admission that it is not interested in creating and growing its own assets. So much of the business now is just a series of contracts with outside companies, which happily take JP's money for things which a news company should be perfectly capable of doing itself: selling adverts, designing supplements and so on.

The directors don't seem to have any ideas of their own, and yet award themselves these ridiculous pay deals which are an insult to both staff and shareholders.

Why blame the banks when it was JP which overspent,over-borrowed and over-stretched itself? By stubags1
