I'm in at about $5.85

Research done - I can think or 7 reasons to buy - so i'm in - let's see what happens :-

1) Front month pressure will moderate due to 20 year high in stocks in "Cushing"

2) Gap to Crude will close as crude more driven by end demand

3) Gap between front month and next large enough to drive speculative buying and storing in tankers

4) Dollar v GBP or EUR supportive given this is $ contract

5) Economic conditions continue to indicate V recovery

6) Emerging and chinese growth should drive demand

7) IF I hold to July expect uptick for US summer and driving season

On the downside this will not perfectly reflect the underlying movement being a daily resetting levered ETF, but at least I wouldn't get margin called out....

Also see article below :-

The premium of European oil over US crude grew to more than $3 a barrel on Tuesday morning, its highest level since August 2009.

Brent crude, the European benchmark, usually trades at a discount to West Texas Intermediate, its US counterpart. But unexpectedly high inventories in the US Midwest – in particular the key transport hub of Cushing, Oklahoma – have pushed down the price of US crude.

Nymex June West Texas Intermediate fell 78 cents to $83.42 a barrel on Tuesday morning in London, while ICE June Brent was 54 cents lower at $86.29. But the premium paid for Brent over WTI had earlier widened to a peak of $3.02.

The US Department of Energy reported last week that crude inventories in the country’s Midwest region, which includes cities such as Chicago, rose to 90.6m barrels, the highest level in at least 20 years. Stocks are building due to strong flows from Canada. Maintenance at several regional refineries has also reduced demand for crude.

The next inventories report will be released on Wednesday and will be closely watched in the market.

The historically high inventory levels have raised fears of oversupply in the near term, driving the front-month WTI contract lower. This has also had the effect of widening the contango – the difference between the prices long-term and nearby contracts – for US crude.

“The growing contango could soon make floating storage look attractive again, thus adding additional pressure to front-month prices,” said Tom Pawlicki at MF Global.

July WTI was trading as much as $2.73 a barrel higher than the June contract on Tuesday, the widest spread since December. A month ago, the price difference between the most immediate contract and the second one was just 15 cents.

The movement in WTI/Brent and spot and forward contracts prices has wrong-footed many investors, analysts say

HELP rollover ?

Currently the Nymex WTI june is trading at a spread of around $2 the highest since around December. Assuming it remains this way when this contract rollsover from front month to the next does anyone know roughly what the effect on price would be ?

Not sure which way it works but could be a good opportunity on this or SOIL ?
Also what date does the rollover averaging begin for this ? By buffett-ramper-slayer

Learning from this share

I have been badly burned by this share and learned lots about the very corressive effects of such leveraged shares. I bought in heavily when oil was at $50 and then around $42 a barrel but am still down around 18%.

Only a few weeks ago the price was $4.85 and has recovered to $6.18. As oil approaches the $100 level and then beyond I am considering selling a proportion each time it gets up to around $6.25 and then rebuying the same number of shares if it falls below $5. These shares are only for the short term and this is how they should be traded. It will help reduce my % loss if it works out. Those considering this share... DON'T, the currency also has a bad effect. If you are in it is best to trade between tight limits and not to consider significant gains if the oil price goes up.

It is incredible to think that this share was introduced to the market at about $95 a share and fell to $3!! I think this is what fooled the unwary. By murren7

Re: Yowser

you're quite right. I think the point I was making was that for a long-term hold it may make more sense to buy the non-leveraged ETF because, even if oil prices rise over time, the short-term price volatility of oil is so great that you may actually stand to make a better return without leverage.
Re: Yowser

i hope you realise that it is possible for crude to get back to $82 and this etf to be worth less than it is today......... i'm currently sitting on a loss on this even though i bought when crude was much cheaper than it is now. this one is not for faint hearted as a long term hold imho. there is potential to make really good on it but not guaranteed to go up just because crude does over a period of time. might be more profitable to try and win on the volatility By Gingerexpat

Re: Yowser

I'm still holding this too. It's fun to have a direct interest is oil prices. Of course the DJ-UBS index it tracks is so volatile that in the long run its hard to make any more than with the non-leveraged tracker (I bought when light crude was $78 in June 09 and now I need it to rise to nearly $82 to get back to my original price).

Anyone know which commodities are historically the least volatile? By admanB

Hi Peapod999,
Yes, I'm still playing this!!! I love the crazy swings -and if it swings down to much - I just wait a few months!!! long term crude price is always going to go up - even if it takes years, so I only use money I don't need for years!! so far v good results from this ETFS.
