Re: Fundamentals..plus weather

DJ ICE Sugar Review:Hits 2-Month Low As Prices Rise Beyond Demand

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--ICE Futures U.S. world raw sugar futures dropped to
two-month lows Monday as traders sold amid signs that prices are too far beyond
the levels where end users buy.

Most-active May sugar settled down 184 points, or 7.62%, at 24.12 cents a
pound. During the session, the contract touched 24.02, its lowest price since
Dec. 22.

March sugar futures have dropped 18.5% from the 29-year high at 30.40 cents
hit Feb. 1. The rally came amid tight world supplies driven by too much rain in
top consumer and No. 2 producer India this season. Excess precipitation in
Brazil, the leading producer and exporter, added to futures gains. More
supplies are expected from Brazil as a new harvest season begins around April.

Analysts said traders sold sugar futures as May prices were unable to gain
enough traction to push above resistance at the 26.30-26.45 level. Traders sold
bullish long positions as these technical cues and international demand
sentiment indicated prices weren't likely to rise soon.

World sugar prices are too high to attract demand from international buyers,
said a New York-based sugar broker and analyst. Front-month ICE sugar prices
are nearly 10 cents a pound higher than last year at the same time.

Analysts said sugar has the chance to sink further in the near term.

"As long as the downtrend at 26.30 remains intact, we still see the
possibility of the market correcting lower down to eventually 22-20 cents," the
broker/analyst said.

May sugar futures have nearby support at 23.90 cents a pound, says Boyd
Cruel, senior softs analyst at Vision Financial Markets in Chicago. Cruel noted
traders also liquidated long positions in preparation for March futures first
notice day on Friday.

The International Sugar Organization expects sugar production of 157.2
million tons, 5.6% short of demand of 166.6 million tons at in the ongoing
2009-10 crop year. However, the world sugar balance may return to a modest
surplus in the coming October-September crop year, the ISO said.

Does your friend have a view on how serious the global shortage might become? The Indian monsoon is pretty dire this year (India is No. 1 sugar consumer and No. 2 producer), and a return of El Nino is predicted, reducing production generally in the southern hemisphere. Factor in a growing demand for sugar-based ethanol globally, and I suspect we haven't seen anything yet in terms of prices. By pied kingfisher
