Michael Page directors sold shares before warning
By Alexandra Stevenson

Stephen Puckett, finance director of Michael Page, and his wife sold more than £2m ($3m) of the recruitment company’s shares in the weeks before it issued a profits warning on Monday. Charles-Henri Dumon, who runs the company’s businesses in Europe, South Africa and North America, also sold shares.
The recruitment company warned on Monday that its markets had weakened since its previous trading statement in October, and that its short-term visibility had been reduced, particularly for permanent placements.

It blamed increasing levels of macroeconomic uncertainty for a slowing of its gross profit growth rate. As a result, the company said that its profits for 2011 would be slightly below the bottom end of the range of analysts’ forecasts.
On November 21, the company said Mr Puckett and his wife, Amanda, had sold more than 594,000 shares at prices between 376p and 380p. They generated more than £2.25m in total proceeds from the share sales. Mr Puckett also exercised options to acquire 50,000 shares at 191p then sold them for 380p. The trades took place on November 17 and 18.
The company said on November 16 that on that day and the previous day, Mr Dumon sold a total of 130,000 shares at prices between 365p and 369p.
The recruitment company has declined to comment further on the transactions.
The share price fell 5 per cent to 345.9p on Monday, before falling another 1.7 per cent to 340p on Tuesday. It is down 37 per cent so far this year against a 27 per cent fall in the FTSE All-share.
In July, Michael Page announced that Mr Puckett, who joined the company in 1996 would be leaving for personal reasons. The company has not given a specific date for its finance director’s departure.
Gross profit growth rates are falling in most of the company’s businesses. In Europe, the Middle East and Africa, which accounts for almost half of the total business, the growth rate (in constant currencies) fell from 23 per cent in the third quarter to 18 per cent in October and November.
In Asia-Pacific, the growth rate slowed from 35 per cent to 21 per cent. In the Americas, the growth rate slowed from 47 per cent to 28 per cent.
“We continue to react and manage the business as we have in previous periods of economic slowdowns, adjusting our headcount to reflect market conditions and continuing to invest where we have opportunities for longer-term growth,” the company said on Monday.

Gains amid volatile London trading

Michael Page gains amid volatile London trading
By Bryce Elder and Neil Hume

Michael Page outperformed a volatile London market on optimism that the labour market may not be as weak as feared.
Shares in the white-collar staffing group bounced 5.8 per cent to 385½p after HSBC turned positive in a staffing sector review.

US job vacancies had rebounded since their August trough, led by a sharp recovery in the professional and business services sectors, said HSBC.
Analyst Matthew Lloyd said: “If this momentum holds, the implication should not be underestimated.”
Global labour markets had mirrored the US “for as long as there are records”, Mr Lloyd added.
He expected Europe to follow the trend – albeit with a longer than usual lag of six to nine months.
So while earnings forecasts for European recruiters might have further to fall, prices had factored in
a sharp downturn, HSBC said.
Sovereign debt remained the only focus for the wider market on another choppy day, with the FTSE 100 dropping 2 per cent from its session high to its session low in mid-morning.
By the close, the FTSE was weaker by 0.2 per cent, or 8.42 points, to 5,509.02. Stocks trading without dividend rights cost the index about 15 points.

RNS today-am i missing something here?!?!

Is it the "Net Cash" in their bank balances or is this the Net Profit??? I'm a bit unsure here. Also if they are not reporting the actual Net profit then this should ring alarm bells for all involved here. Doesnt matter if gross profits are up if actual net profits are down imo. Maybe I have just mis-read the RNS!!! If we are heading towards another recession etc. then MPI will be hit very hard make no mistake. Can someone please help on the Net profit issue. I have checked last years Q3 RNS and have "Net cash at 30 September 2010 in the region of £71m (30 June 2010: £65.7m)" a real significant decrease!!!! I maybe wrong in my observations here. By besucool

The Independent-Adecco bid talk returns

Market Report:
By Toby Green
Wednesday, 24 August 2011
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/sharewatch/market-report-michael-page-climbs-as-adecco-bid-talk-returns-2342735.html

The possibility of Michael Page becoming a takeover target again was in focus last night following rumours Adecco could be gearing up for another attempt at the recruiter.

The group enjoyed a late spurt to shift forwards 11.8p to 362.5p on the mid-tier index after vague speculation suggested it may attract a new approach from the world's largest staffing group.

Adecco entered into bid talks with Michael Page in 2008 , valuing it at 400p a share, before pulling out after being rejected twice, but the latest chatter said it could now offer as much as 550p a share. Meanwhile, the Amsterdam-listed recruiter Randstad was also said by market gossips to be potentially interested in the company.

Michael Page received another boost yesterday from Deutsche Bank calling it "the highest quality recruitment firm under our coverage", although the broker kept its "hold" rating, saying current fears over the economic climate meant there was "too much downside risk in the shares".

This was despite the group currently being around its lowest share price for over a year, having fallen by a third in less than a month. Its half-year results last week were particularly disappointing, as it warned of a slowdown at its banking business while its pretax profit for the period missed market expectations. Michael Page International

Questor says BUY
The key to this is the company’s presence in rapidly growing markets in emerging economies.
Michael Page has moved into these fledgling economies with good timing – so the business is operating in markets that are growing rapidly with little competition.
The company only expands organically. Steve Ingham, chief executive, says that in people-led businesses such as recruitment, promoting the right people from within the business with experience is the only way to expand into new territories.
This strategy resulted in the group posting a rise in “gross profit” of 29.6pc to £147.8m. This was just 3pc below the company’s record quarterly gross profit figure in the second quarter of 2008, before the financial crisis really took hold.
This gross profits figure should really be interpreted as “net fee income”, as this figure strips out the wages in temporary placements that are paid to the staff and includes fees relating to permanent placements. Pre-tax profit figures will be released alongside the full interim numbers, due on August 15.
Michael Page’s gross profit figure was about 7pc ahead of estimates. In the past week rival Hays has posted a rise in gross profit of 14pc and Robert Waters has tabled an increase of 21pc.
This is an impressive performance by Michael Page, but some analysts expressed surprise that the company did not increase its full-year guidance. The reason for this is that Mr Ingham wants to continue investing in his business to secure future growth. This is a sensible, long-term move. The market is very short termist and Mr Ingham could have got upgrades and got the share price moving even more by slowing down investments and posting large profits. It’s better for investors, such as Questor readers, that he continues to invest.
Past investment in new territories has really paid off. In the second quarter gross profit in Asia Pacific soared by 51pc and it makes up 19pc of the group. In the Europe, Middle East and Africa region, which makes up 43pc of the group, gross profits rose 37pc. The UK is 23pc of revenues and growth here was 6.4pc.
Net cash as of June 30 stood in the region of £25m.
Research from Citigroup has shown that, during upcycles, Michael Page tends to widen its operating margins by 200 to 300 basis points a year, as well as delivering double-digit compound growth over the cycle.
The company also unveiled a number of board changes, the most important of which is that Stephen Puckett, finance director for more than 10 years, is stepping down for personal reasons, but will continue in the role until a new appointment is made.
Analysts expect good growth over the next few years from the company and this can be seen in the sharp fall off of its earnings multiples. In the current year the multiple is 22.5, which is steep, but this falls to 15.4 in 2012 and 11.7 in 2013. The prospective yield is just 1.8pc.
The shares are a new buy for growth in emerging markets
