In light of the uncertain economic backdrop, we are making a precautionary trim to our recruitment sector estimates. This adjustment therefore does not reflect any particular issue at Matchtech, rather a deterioration in general levels of confidence, which we expect to affect the sector. The company continues to trade satisfactorily and the broadening of the business model by geography and sector should provide a degree of counter-cyclicality. The maintained dividend provides a premium yield.
Prelims were as expected from the early August trading update. They showed good growth in Net Fee Income (NFI), offset by the investment phase of new business streams that are helping broaden the group’s base by sector and by geography. The expansion has drawn on working capital but net debt remains well within facilities. The current financial year will see the new activities starting to pay back. That and further increases in contractor numbers in the early weeks of FY12 give us confidence on forecasts despite our assumptions on a tough trading environment.

Apr 11th 2011 - Edison Investment Research

today published a report on Matchtech (MTEC.L, LSE:MTEC, LON:MTEC) entitled "First Signs Of Payback". In summary, the report says:

Matchtech’s interim results confirm that February’s trading statement was simply as it described – a timing mismatch between additional investment in overhead in the new professional services business and the revenues coming through.

The balance of the group is performing well, with demand for highly-qualified IT professionals and engineers in the aerospace and automotive sectors strong.

The maintenance of the dividend testifies to management’s confidence regarding the longer-term prospects, but the share price may need the reassurance of seeing earnings delivered.

Matchtech boosts investment

Created: 8 April 2011 Written by: Jonas Crosland

Recruiter Matchtech warned in February that profits would be down on earlier expectations, but the core recruitment operation remains in good health - total net fee income grew 9 per cent in the period to £13.6m and contractor numbers on assignment reached a record 5,200.
The profit fall reflected a £1.6m operating loss at the recently launched professional services division, which operates under the brands Barclay Meade and Alderwood Education. While net fee income here rose 31 per cent to £1.7m, an additional £2.3m was spent on building up the sales force. Moreover, the tough trading climate meant that net fee income didn't grow as quickly as anticipated.
But the overall picture was much brighter with fees from permanent placings having risen 45 per cent to £4.2m. Although contract fees were 2 per cent lower at £9.4m as margins were squeezed from the renegotiation and extension of the group's two largest contracts with BAE Systems and Transport for London. Trading is expected to improve in the second half, with IT, engineering and professional services seen as the top three sectors for improved levels of demand.
Peel Hunt expects full-year adjusted pre-tax profit of £7.4m, giving EPS of 22.4p (2010: £8.6m/26.1p).
TIP UPDATE:
Buy
Matchtech's management was confident enough about prospects to maintain the dividend, which makes for an especially tasty yield. Add that to the steady growth in fee income and a forward PE ratio of nine looks too low. Buy.
Our view: Buy

Share price: 209p (-3.5p)

Investors in Matchtech, the staffing firm whose shares suffered a sudden tumble after it warned on full-year profits in February, must have been relieved when the company issued its interim results yesterday.

There were no nasty surprises, and the update suggested that there had been some improvement, particularly in Matchtech's newly launched professional services brands.

In response, analysts, who had revised forecasts at the time of the profit warning in February, stuck to their estimates. Peel Hunt also highlighted the fact that the company boasts a strong balance sheet, which should hold it in good stead as performance improves.

It is also worth noting that the recent pullback has left the stock on a fairly thin valuation of less than nine times forward earnings, which, when coupled with the strong 7 per cent forecast yield, makes us conclude it might be time to wade in.

GCI recommendation

By Ben Jaglom

In its latest trading update, technical recruiter Matchtech has reported a 14% fall in net fee income for the year to July.

Matchtech, which recruits for sectors including defence, marine & shipping and engineering, saw reduced volumes last year amidst a decline in recruitment across those industries. Adrian Gunn, CEO, who joined the company as a recruitment consultant and has worked at Matchtech for twenty-two years now, explains the AIM-listed concern is looking to build on its capability of and experience in sourcing permanent employees for clients.

Asked if Matchtech was overly-exposed to potential cuts by the coalition government, finance director Tony Dyer said '50% of our work is public sector-funded, however only 19% is with direct clients such as Transport for London (TFL) or local authorities'. He also pointed out that the type of contractor Matchtech supplies works on infrastructure projects in sectors such as highways. 'Maintenance of assets such as roads is essential', Dyer explained, 'and therefore we expect a continuation of contracts in those areas'.

Regardless of government spending cuts, which could affect business from major clients including BAE Systems and Babcock, Matchtech is a fundamentally good company with a cash-generative model, an experienced board and a generous dividend policy. Broker KBC Peel Hunt expects the company to pay out 14p in dividends for the years to July 2010 and 2011, meaning Matchtech shares, recommended by Growth Company Investor at 222.5p in February, offer a bumper 7.2% yield at these lowly levels. They are well worth holding onto for the attractive and dependable dividend alone.
