Shares have had a good run since last sept. and they are probably taking profits to meet cash calls elsewhere. Lots of investors running for cover and taking monies of funds etc to meet losses and the need for cash.
This still remains a buy , with price target 290p-333p. This is in the right sector as the next super cycle has begun in healthcare. By vx1

I'd rather have expected to see another news item that someone else now has a large stake. However, a significant and notifiable shareholding may not have been built up, yet.
Otherwise there are a lot of shares out there that have been quietly passed on to multiple smaller holders - and that's normally hard to achieve without comment, or a drop in price!
Let's hope product progress continues to fuel a rising share price. By S17

TIM SHARP CITY EDITOR

23 Nov 2011
SCOTTISH company Optos, which has produced retinal scanners to detect eye problems and other sometimes serious diseases, unveiled a 73% hike in annual pre-tax profits to $22 million (£14.1m) and said it is increasingly confident about its prospects.

Shares in the Dunfermline-based company climbed to 233p, a four-year high in the immediate wake of the news. But they later fell back to 204.5p, a 21.25p or 9.4% drop on the day.

The company saw revenue soar 35% from $106.3m (£67.8m) to $143.3m (£91.5m) over the year to September 30 and is aiming to break the $300m (£191.5m) barrier by 2015, with $500m (£319m) a longer term goal.

Chief executive Roy Davis told The Herald: “We have all the drivers in place to pursue growth. It is now about executing and driving forward what we have. I think we have plenty of opportunity to grow the business.”

jhjkh kjh kjh kjkjh kjhkjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjjkh kjh kjh kjh kjh kjhkjkjh kjhkjhkjh kjh kjh kjh kjh
Optos’s retinal scanning devices allow 200-degree imaging, which the company says supports practitioners in diagnosing, analysing and monitoring conditions that may first present towards the edge of the eye and could go undetected using traditional techniques.

Optos’s underlying like-for-like sales growth of 25% was driven in part by a shift in business model from pay per patient renal models to include fixed rental contracts, rent-to-own and outright purchases.

Its purchase of Australian company Opto Global last year helped to boost the bottom line.

Last month, Optos snapped up Opko Instrumentation.

The figures were “bang in line with expectations”, Investec analyst Sebastien Jantet said, “with the change in the business model delivering strong growth both at the top and bottom lines”.

Mr Davis said he thought that Optos could boost revenues to $300m (£191.5m) by 2015.

“Twenty per cent revenue growth would be a significant achievement,” he said.

He also mooted the possibility of breaking the $500m (£319m) barrier in the longer term.

This bullishness marks a turnaround for the company which was still loss-making in 2009.

Mr Davis, who joined Optos in November 2008 having run medical device company Gyrus until its takeover by Olympus, said: “What I got was not what I was expecting. Optos was in reality a turnaround story. We have turned it around and got it into growth.”

The company employs 400 people worldwide including 150 in the UK, most of them at its base in Fife where the bulk of its research and development work is undertaken. Fife has been boosted by 20 new hires in the last year.

Optos is now preparing for the launch early next year of Daytona, a product it describes as its “next-generation”, ultra-wide field retinal scanning device.

It is much smaller than existing Optos scanners, designed to produce higher-quality images.

“At volume it will cost less [than existing devices],” Mr Davis said. “We hope it will drive out global adoption of the technology.”

It is dust resistant and offers auto-fluorescence, which can detect changes in eye cells.

Optos is working on a device that combines the wide view of its existing products with the depth of view of the Opko scanner.

It could offer laser-based eye treatment devices in the future. By SpikeyDT
