Competition

Both Pendragon and Inchcape will come under increasing pressure for some time to come from the emerging, better run, dealer groups that both will and are gaining market share.

Cambria, Vertu, JCT 600, and Marshall group, are all 50 site, and growing groups, that are slicker, better run, and totally more focuused than the lumbering 280 site, debt laden, Pendragon, and the far too diversified Inchcape. Lookers will not come under similar pressure as they are a well run business of just over 100 sites, with a board of directors who have a track record of successful car retailing, and are 35% owned by two ex motor men, namely Bramhall and Petchey, who totally understand the sector.

Sytner group also regularly feature highly in the Times top 100 companies to work for, and are clearly a well run business.

With competition such as this it is difficult to indentify the Pendragon usp.

Current Situation

The company is enjoying renewned vigour in its operations with a posative upbeat in confidence within its team. The results demonstrate a real turnaround in performance.Recognition of this has been acknowledged in the award for best share price recovery/performance in 2009, which was awarded recently. Pendragon as the largest retail Motor Group will always fall victim to criticism as its sheer size attracts opinions both negative and posative.
For potential investors I can report there is a real sense of excitement as the difficult decisions made along the way to the turnaround, "kick in!"
The attempts of disgruntled previous employees to cultivate an impression of negativity is neither real or relevant. By Featherman

Re: Motivation

This is the type of thing I have written about. I have seen this type of thing happen more than once. Now this man will soon be working for our competition.

If he had been that bad why was he recruited in the first place? If he was failing why wasn't he coached and retrained.

Attitudes must change. If they don't then we as a company have no future. These are not Gods ruling our company just mere mortals, despite what they may think. Mortals have a finite life span and the end has to be approaching. By geoffrw

Motivation

As someone who has experienced being removed from their job to make way for a favoured person who blotted his position elsewhere I am very cynical at how this company play with people's livelihoods and careers ! I was with the company for 5 years without one word of warning about my performance etc However when they needed to slot some one in it was done with utmost proficiency. Yes I was compensated but it still does not replace my savaged career and these guys are still there playing God. Be reassured they do not care about anyone in any business - these regional people play to please the two main men knowing that kowtowing to them will ensure them remaining in their jobs because if you question them you are out. And these guys all cover each other 's backs - the profitable deals are done among them and the bread and butter guys get the crumbs so they are competing against their peers with one hand tied behind their backs. You will still get a ballocking for poor performance and all the time they are trying to get yes people for no money and no bonus.
You could say I feel bitter - No ! Not really but do warn you this company will never get anywhere while these clowns are controlling the organisation. They do not have a clue about efforts on the shop floor - they try to control everything and give as little support as possible. I could say loads more but suffice to say this company is going nowhere fast! By lazzaD

Re: motivation

I very rarely post on here but have to agree with the essence of these posts. There is a culture of people are easily replaced facilities do not sell cars, hours or parts people do .
Motivation takes many forms and the kick kick kick mentality is the wrong one.
The post saying if you work for PDG you have hit the bottom is a very worrying statement and if true very damming.
I wonder is the problem there are too many 'group' people trying to justify their jobs reporting on producive staff being unsatisfactory when they really should be helping encourageing not pralysis by analyiss!

Re: MOTIVATION

I agree our Directors seem very quick to kick and to blame the soldiers on the shop floor when things go wrong. This leads to bad feeling in the ranks and does NOT inspire loyalty.

Re: MOTIVATION

FWIW I suspect the problem with PDG along with most larger companies is that things have been good for so long that they have become inefficient, so inefficient that the process has become king, rather than the customer. Essentially we have put bureaucratic public sector ethos in place in the private sector. All about the quality of the box ticking, rather than the quality of the people. Changing that is painful and not easy to do quickly.

I have knocked some people on this board for being too negative, that is not to say that their views haven't caused me to sit up and think about the way this company is run. By Eventrollsloverocknroll

Re: MOTIVATION

We are bound to have some good staff still working for us. But we are no longer a Company that the majority WANT to work for.

Every time we generate a bitter member of staff we make an enemy who is working against the company and talking to our potential customers spreading their tales of doom.

The other question we have to ask ourselves is this. If we are getting rid of so many people because they are rubbish then why are we recruiting them in the first place. I believe that our current recruitment people are simply getting it wrong.

This is a major problem that is costing the Company time and money, and needs to be addressed. We Need to be employing the RIGHT PEOPLE and keeping them.

Hiring quality people is not rocket science and when we have them we need to remember that the best MOTIVATION is the carrot NOT the stick.

We have to become a happy Company to work for not as we are now. By geoffrw

Re: MOTIVATION

Hmm well the other way to look at it, is that all the rubbish staff who couldn't sell anything have been let go. And the reason PDG has posted a small profit in a dire economic environment is that the poor staff have been replaced by those that know what they are doing. Hence the reason there are so many biiter ex-employees posting on here. Of course, that could just be wishful thinking................ By Eventrollsloverocknroll

MOTIVATION

This is a fairly optimistic situation. In a year when business has been fairly diabolical Pendragon are actually making a profit.

I’m no expert in Company structure and financing but I do know the motor trade. I believe the market will grow slowly as people regain the confidence and start to spend again. Many people have put off changing their car and are very keen to do so when the situation is right.

My only fear is that the Management team are damaging our recovery potential by their management style. Staff, especially sales staff need to feel wanted and valued. It’s an ego thing.

Pendragon has alienated and lost many of the good staff that we once had. Now they work for the opposition, and many hate Pendragon as many of the posts on this web site show. This is not a good thing we need to empower OUR team not the oppositions.

I am told by former colleagues that if you work for Pendragon you are considered to have hit rock bottom. The good people work for the competition. This is not good.

To realise this company’s true potential we have to develop and nurture our staff. Our sales Directors have got to “get real”.

We need to get rid of these super suited yes men with fancy titles and get some people who know how to DO the job. NOT JUST TALK ABOUT IT.

Selling is not rocket science but it does have to be done properly. Its time to start being nice to both staff and our customers alike.

Fix these problems and you will see this company regain its former strengths, leave things as they are and we have a problem.

Mr Finn and Mr Casher you may be good at running the Company but you are not good at running your staff.

Out

Well I sold up yesterday and took a small loss.

Unfortunately I thought they'd move forward on the results however with the double dip possibility weighing on people's minds I think they may stay here for a while or slowly drift.

I'll keep watching and may get back in here or vertu in a few months if the economy looks like sustained recovery.

I perversley enjoyed the doom mongers on here although I was convinced it would get back into the low 40's.
