Re: Hedge at 1408

hedging at 1408 is a very positive decision, just the same as when they did it at 1663, some people saying gold will go to 2000 not the case
the main point is that at 1408 they are safe/profitable and what is wrong taking some insurance rather than being greedy hoping the price of gold will go towards 2000

Re: Gold Hedging

Yes must have been a typo for 1999, when Gordon brown sold off our gold at the bottom

Wiki
Between 1999 and 2002 Brown sold 60% of the UK's gold reserves shortly before gold entered a protracted bull market, since nicknamed by dealers as Brown Bottom.[53][54][55] The official reason for selling the gold reserves was to reduce the portfolio risk of the UK's reserves by diversifying away from gold.[56] The UK eventually sold about 395 tons of gold over 17 auctions from July 1999 to March 2002, at an average price of about US$275 per ounce, raising approximately US$3.5 billion.[57] By 2011, that quantity of gold would be worth over $19 billion, leading to Brown's decision to sell the gold being widely criticised.[58]

Re: Gold Hedging

has the article been proof read... $252/oz in 2009????

I think the secular bear market in gold from 81-00 was more to do with the implementation of real positive interest rates resulting from Volcker's roll out of his disinflation policies (which were an andidote to the horrible mess of the 70s - perpetrated by a past master money printer, Arthur Burns)... Until interest rates are 'real' gold, IMO, will continue in its bull run - what we are experiencing now is a normal correction in a bull market, IMO.

I don't think the establishment will ever willingly implement real interest rates as you'd get a 30s style depression. By Abdnloon

Gold Hedging

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/investing/gold/10071998/Risk-of-vicious-circle-for-gold-as-hedging-returns.html

Tyler Broda from Nomura said this may signal the return of “structural hedging” across the industry, with other companies scrambling to lock in forward contracts. “This could increase the pressure on the spot gold price over the coming years,” he said. The risk is a vicious circle as hedging leads to lower prices, leading to more hedging.

The process pushed gold down to $252 an ounce in 2009, though there were many other forces at work, including sales by the Bank of England and other Western central banks.

“It was hedging that killed gold prices the 1990s,” said Ross Norman from Sharps Pixley. “Every time there was rally, the producers seized on the chance to sell forward. It was most unhelpful.”
Back of a fag pack calculation mean that PoG would need to fall below $1200/oz for POG's avg price to be less than $1500/oz for 2013. POG has now secured itself the time needed for those projects stated in its update.
