Seymour Pierce

Extract from Citywire:

"Seymour Pierce says 'hold' as Rentokil disappoints

Kevin Lapwood, analyst at Seymour Pierce, has reiterated his 'hold' recommendation on business services firm Rentokil (RTO.L) following results that missed consensus expectations.

In the first quarter of the year sales rose 3.6% in constant currency terms, which was marginally better than expected, but adjusted operating profits declined by 6.7% to £33.3 million, significantly behind Lapwood's forecast of £42 million.

City Link, the group's parcel-delivery unit, continues to be a sore spot, with losses from the division rising 18.7% to £12.7 million over the quarter.

Robert Morton, analyst at Investec, said that getting City Link to pull its weight was vital for Rentokil: 'The key to the full year will be the long-awaited improvement in City Link,' he said.

The pest-control division for which the group is best known, meanwhile, has plenty of opportunities ahead. A mild winter in the US has lifted vermin numbers, and the rat population is soaring in Libya following last year's unrest, so the company plans to reopen its office in the country.

Shares in the group, for which Lapwood has a target price of 70p, closed at 83.20p on Friday, down 3.40p or 3.93%."

Re: Results

Great post Veksi. I'm definitely adding you to my favourites.

To clarify would you say the results were more 'poor than average' or more 'average than poor'.

Either way, great analysis and you've inspired me and no doubt a few others, to have a go over the next few days. I cant promise to match your profundity or depth of knowledge though. By Rubstic

Re: City Link Competition...

It is interesting that the Post Office and its supporters have always said that it would be impossible for private companies to do the 'difficult' one off deliveries effectively and thus make decent money for their investors.
City link has been around for a long time and should know the game even if of recent years that has not been very apparent! I leased a building to one of their regional depots for many years and they were a good tenant, I sold the building with them in it, they were always busy.
My bet is that they will benefit and return to health but that R'kill will dispose of them at some point anyway, simply because the parcel delivery business will be a tough low margin game for a long time to come and the fit in RTO is questionable, but timing will be dictated by performance.
If it is of any interest I am staying with RTO for some time yet but have very little money in it.

I think it is a very difficult business-- unless you have lots of parcels for the one road/area-which suggests that takeovers and amalgamations and rationalisations should take place.

Is the implication of this that if CL hang on then all will come right as the competion, loss making by the look of it, raise their prices, or is it just a fact that parcel delivery is a lousy business to be in.
As a very small SH my hope is that it is the former! All comment welcomed. By ianianf

Re: Up Today.../CityLink?

I tend to agree with you about CityLink. Get rid of it and you've inceased profit by £30m.

Today's 2p rise comes after Morgan Stanley went overweight with a price target of £1.05.

It was mentioned in the press that rumours of a private equity bid were behind friday's 4p increase. Not sure if there is any truth behind it (there usually isn't). The only thing that makes me wonder is that daily volume is double what it has been in previous months. The recent results might still be having an impact though.

I'm definitely holding on for the foreseeable.
