SpaceandPeople (S&P) sells promotional and retail space in high footfall venues in the UK, Germany, and India (via an associate company). In addition, Retail Profile (a 100% sub of S&P) has a licence agreement with Retail Profile Russia who has contracted with shopping centres (owned by IKEA) for RMU subletting in their Russian shopping centres.Strong results today saw net revenues rise by 20% in H1 2011 versus H1 2010. Our full year forecasts remain unchanged (diluted EPS of 6.41p) based on a “normal” seasonal split, continued growth in the UK business and expansion of the German retail operations. We retain our existing 92p / share fair value target versus 73p now By SpikeyDT

SpaceandPeople sells promotional and retail space in high footfall venues in the UK and Germany, and also in India via an associate company. In addition, Retail Profile (a 100% sub of SpaceandPeople) has a licence agreement ) for retail merchandising units (RMUs) subletting in their Russian shopping centresOver the last 12 months they have successfully delivered the acquisition and integration of Retail Profile, a move of business premises, and won and begun the roll out a new business line in Germany.
The Scotsman..

SpaceandPeople lifted by 'pop-up' popularity

Published Date: 18 March 2011

By ERIKKA ASKELAND

A FAD for "pop-up" shopping units and in-store events for the X-Box Kinect has boosted sales and profits at "experiential marketing" firm SpaceandPeople.

The company's share price soared 45 per cent to close at 67.5p as it revealed a 189 per cent boost in revenues to £7.8 million.

Pre-tax profit more than doubled to £1.3m, although the figures cover a 14 month period after the Glasgow-based company switched its year end to 31 December, taking in the important Christmas trading period.

On an annualised basis - the 12 months to 31 December - revenues rose by 15 per cent to £8.9m and operating profit by 10 per cent to £1.44m.

These figures also includes those of Retail Profile, which was acquired in May 2010 for £6.3m.

Matthew Bending, right, founder and chief executive of SpaceandPeople, said the two businesses working together had "a long way to go" in the UK where the firm has promotional deals with 290 shopping malls.

This year, SpaceandPeople also launched kiosks into the German market, winning an exclusive deal to set up "retail merchandising units" with ECE Projektmanagement.

Bending said: "Shopping centres increasingly want to make more money from their mall space.

Putting up rents is difficult, putting up shops is difficult, so it is about how to they wring more margin out of their shopping centres.

"This is a vital, viable way, which we developed in Scotland which wasn't being done anywhere else in the world.

"We are still a small company but we are the market leader in Germany, Russia and in India."

Bending launched the firm in 2000 after working as the marketing manager of the Thistles shopping centre in Stirling.

One of the firm's first major clients was shopping mall owner Standard Life Investments.

SpaceandPeople BUY

17/03/2011 Miles Nolan

AIM listed SpaceandPeople (SAL) has not disappointed since our advice to buy the shares in the March issue of Growth Company Investor. The experiential marketing specialist had a busy 2010 with a move to a new head office in Glasgow, a meaty shopping centre agreement in Germany and the acquisition of Retail Profile (RP).

Results for the year to 31 December reveal a 189% lift in revenues to £7.77m as pre-tax profits jumped 149% to £1.26m. Shareholders will share in the uplift with a 30% leap in the dividend to 2.6p. The star performer was Germany, now in its third year of operation the division increased its operating profits 100-fold to £375,000. Sales also jumped as a result of signing several long term contracts with a major telecoms firm.

The RP deal led to exceptional deal charges of £331,000, but thanks to the renegotiation of contracts and tighter cost controls annual savings of £500,000 have been achieved. RP operates 233 Retail Merchandising Units (RMU's) and has recently moved into Germany with 18 sites - up to 200 are planned by the end of 2012. Space also has a business in India that is in 30 malls and is on course to record a profit this year. Future territories under consideration include France, Spain, Portugal and Holland.

Space works for a raft of large brands. Recent promotional campaigns in the UK include the launch of Cycle Superhighways for Transport for London, new routes for Easyjet and the X-box 'Kinect' add-on. In an interview with Growth Company Investor chief executive Matthew Bending says 'the current year has started strongly with all divisions ahead of budget'.

House broker Seymour Pierce has held its current year forecast with pre-tax profits of £2.1m and EPS of 7.7m in sight. We urged readers to buy in at 44.5p, so the surge 61p is welcome news. On under eight times 2011 earnings the shares remain too low. Buy.

Maximising space efficiently;BUY

10/03/2011 Miles Nolan

AIM-listed SpaceandPeople was set up to provide shopping centres with the ability to sell their promotional mall space. Founded in 2001, the group is now the leading provider of promotional space in the UK.

The service is used in 372 shopping venues, providing revenue-hungry clients with access to a combined weekly footfall of more than 47 million customers.

Advertising in shopping centres spans promotional stands through to digital screens and even free newspaper distribution.

For the shopping centre owner it provides additional revenue to rental income and can be used to offset overheads.

Using a proprietary internet-based system, space is used by brand owners and advertising agencies to help promote sales and brand awareness.

Blue-chip users include British Telecom, Coca-Cola, Gillette and O2.

SpaceandPeople also has a call centre that allows advertisers to book space for short-term retailing and experiential marketing promotions on a national basis.

By honing in on a specific audience, brand owners can carefully target their spend to areas of high foot fall.

Last year, the group expanded its reach with the £6.3 million acquisition of Retail Profile.

The business is a leading provider of stand-alone retail units in shopping centres, which are known as ‘retail merchandising units’ (RMUs).

The deal was earnings enhancing as the renegotiation of certain contracts is already contributing to the bottom line.

It also brings access to relationships with over 500 merchants that trade with 34 shopping centres in the UK. Moreover, the business has a strong foothold in Russia, with operations in 13 shopping centres owned by IKEA comprising over 200 RMUs.

Retail Profile typically pays a minimum annual rent to the property owner, and the units are then rented out on a short-term basis.

Retail Profile has 220 RMUs in the UK, and trading is seasonal as the first half is typically loss making and Christmas is the peak sales period.

Encouragingly, half the outlay for the acquisition was taken in shares and the vendors have stayed with the business.

UK shopping centre owners are increasingly seeking ways to rationalise their supplier base.

By combining operations SpaceandPeople is now a one-stop shop so is much better placed to coordinate pricing, margin and yield.

Expansion overseas has helped drive growth for SpaceandPeople.

Efforts in Germany have proved fruitful, with 76 shopping centres now signed up and the operation recently returned to the black.

Retail Profile announced a 200-plus RMU contract in December in Germany with ECE – the leading shopping centre provider.

A joint venture in India was set up two years ago. It has 44 malls using the service and a move to profitability is imminent.

SpaceandPeople has also signed a deal to operate in eight regional airports including Exeter, Bristol and Leeds.

This brings access to 19 million passengers as the group works with a mix of local and regional clients.

There is no upfront payment, the agreement instead being on a revenue share basis.

Due to the acquisition of Retail Profile, the year-end has changed from October to December.

Interim figures for the eight months to 30 June revealed sales up 23.6 per cent to £2.1 million as operating profits increased 31 per cent to £286,576.

Founder and CEO Matthew Bending says that ‘trading has been good, the [Retail Profile] deal is providing synergies and the outlook remains very positive’.

Full-year results are due in mid-March and should reveal a sharp hike in pre-tax profits. Indeed, house broker Seymour Pierce also expects net cash of £1.3 million.

The shares have a limited free float and the wide spread does not help, but the current price looks like an anomaly.

On less than six times 2011 earnings and with a near 5 per cent yield the shares are too low.

Buy.

Status - good long term

Hi,

I've been in this since about 90p, so still in profit. Can't give much advise as I'm still a newbie. However, what I can say is that looking at the current Interim report, they seem to be coping well despite the current climate: Profit before tax up 19%. After 6 months, Germany is in profit. Furthermore, £1.2 million of cash on the balance sheet at the half year end.

For me the exciting part is the growth aspects - expansion to Hong Kong, Macau and Asia.

However, as a small cap stock it too has been hit and with lack of regular updates on their website I'm not surprised there is hardly any movement on this stock - people moving their money away to safe bets IMHO and so this is going to take a couple of years to see any real movement - long term view is good I think, so reinvesting my dividends.

Any advice is appreciated.

As always DYOR.
