I'm trading really well in 2012 cheers, having a stormer having bought OPG at 33p and SHFT from 50p up to 80p. Also I'm in RMP since 11p, 21p, 30p and 37p and that one could go ballistic on an oil strike which looks more likely than not which given the reward and it's an aim oily then I'm very pleased with the odds.

Re: I see that...

Good update as usual from the two regulars.

Just a footnote however, the bank isn't the only one sacrificing, having watched my original investment lose 98.2% of its value and passing RBS as the worst current investement that I have, but happily yet to surpass Ferranti and Telewest, shareholders have suffered big style.

Worse still when the first order of business after securing new funding is determining directors' bonuses when a 100x improvement wouldn't offset past failures is a bit offputting. Shades of RBS funnily enough though.

And whatever happened to the insurance money from the furnace issues, and as you mention why did the FD leave?

However, I don't want to sound bitter and twisted, but I won't be joining the directors on the golf course in happy retirement anytime soon based on the performance of this one.

If only John Harvey-Jones was still around to have a go at this one.

Thanks again for the useful analysis rather than the dross that's on some of the discussion boards.

Re: I see that...

Hi John09,

I hope that you are trading well - so far this year it has been very good.

I must admit not paying much attention to SPGH as it is a tiddler in my portfolio. However I did have a quick glance through the results. Project Pheonix seems to say it all. What I suspected is now coming through the accounts - the bank has sacrificed much of its debt to keep the company going - hence a theoretical big profit. The company has a much tidier balence sheet and has mapped a way ahead with new investment. That is the glass half full view.

However, the operating profit does not look that brilliant even if the £3.6m annualised savings is added back in. Underinvestment in the past might well have artificially bloated previous profit statements. Then there is the outlook - expect better turnover in the second half, but the building industry is still in semi crisis mode so intrinsic demand is still weak. then throw in the uncertainty that CERT will be ending this year and the shape of the replacement is undefined. i.e. SPGH MUST have a viable replacement to keep going. .. and then SPGH is shedding directors - why?

So where does that leave us? SPGH is as the blurb says - a company in transition. There is still quite a wait before the new investment really starts to come in. We don't know the final costs yet either as I noted that they had to shelve phase 7 due to insufficient funds. Come back in 2 years time and the company will start to show that it can make some profit and that assumes that the CERT scheme is replaced. So no rush to buy yet. However, for patient holders, I suspect that a recovery in the building industry demand should help both prices and demand to improve - throw in some new products and more retail outlets - then SPGH COULD start to give a reasonable return. In the mean time one can understand the market's concern and has marked the shares back. Again a watching brief with no rush to buy in my opinion. i.e. a Speculative long term hold.

Re: Price Weakness

Hi John09,

According to the Halifax web site SPGH is currently valued at only £9.3m, so I felt that the value is in the company - if only they can translate it into something meaningful. With the capital raised and the bank's haircut, things should be on a fairly stable footing now. As for debt, a hard one to answer as they are just entering a major investment phase. I am hoping that this proceeds smoothly and that the market has improved slightly by the time that they are fully up to steam as it were. If the talked about savings actually materialise then this share could rise by a factor of at least 2 or 3, so it seemed to me worthwhile having a a bit of a punt.

Yes, perhaps it was a brave move but for only a modest outlay: sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Fortunately a sufficiently large number of these moves works out OK, but only part of a larger portfolio.

Price Weakness

I noticed a sharp fall today below the 20p open offer. Nothing obvious for the weakness, although the price had slipped a bit on Friday as well. Sell 5k price was 14.75p and to buy 5k was 18.2p. I am not convinced that the price has bottomed yet, and consider that the spread is too large. On the other hand the sell price had dropped from 18p to 14.5p on a small sale - I concluded that this meant the the broker did not want to acquire stock, but the posted price had 'only' gone down to 19p, so was not in a great hurry to sell either. I still think that it still too soon to see the benefits of the capital investment, so I suspect that the price weakness is caused because the wider market has been rising strongly of late and SPGH is considered as 'dead' money. In the end I decided to hedge my bets and by a very modest 5k of shares (at 13:03). - At least that makes me feel a bit better after the fat cats bought their priviledged allocation of shares at 20p and this is a better price!!

Re: Voting

Hi rabbitears,
I have some SPGH with my Halifax nominee account. All I had to do was ring up and they put me down for voting, and perks such as the IAG (British Airways) ticket discount. Yes, I did vote for the SPGH agm resolutions.

It is all very quiet with SPGH -pity that they hold their meeting in Scotland - it is a bit far to travel there! Anyone manage to go there?

I guess that we have to sit things out for a year or so while they implement their factory upgrades. Only then will we start to see how viable they are, and perhaps if a bigger outfit wants to acquire their assets on the cheap.

Voting

Hi,
I noticed in the recent agm announcement that there were a number of votes against items. I have never been asked to vote by Supeglass, whereas I have been for other companies.

I'm wondering if it is because I use a nominee company that I'm not getting asked? Would anyone know how to go about getting the info that would require information on voting to be sent to me? The company I'm with mentions getting notifications about agms and attendance etc but the topic of voting is not clear.

As I'm not asked to vote is my vote counted as for or against or not counted at all?

Interim Management Statement

Noticed that the Chairman Tim Ross is going to quit as soon as a replacement has been found. I suppose that he has done the honourable thing and stayed with the company until its refinancing has been completed. ... but why leave in the first place?

The agm statement did not tell me much. A small green shoot with CERT, new build sales more or less holding up, gas prices have gone up and the new investment programme is on-track but the benefits are still a long way away.

The share price is nominally down 0.5p today, although if I am not mistaken the spread has shrunk a bit. I think that the company is still fairly valued at the moment with no obvious reason to rush in to buy: it is too soon to see if the CERT market is going to improve/ the promised benefits on new investment will translate into achieved profit.
