Re: Discount

I agree that 12% is not cause for concern - yet but it is widening. I was wondering though if there is a history of share buy backs at all and if so at what point would such an event be triggered?
There does seem to be a bit of a flight away from risks inherent in these stocks at the moment and it may be for the reason you give. In my own view we haven't yet reached that stage so I am happy to stay. By musker ron

Re: Discount

One could argue that a 12% discount for an IT such as this one is quite reasonable. After all, it is based on smaller companies and is centred in a traditionally volatile market area. Let nobody be under any illusion, this is definitely not 'widows and orphans' territory! Personally, I have taken profits by selling half my holding, that had increased in value by some 130%, some weeks ago. Informed opinion is now having us believe that we are approaching a 'bubble' situation in the Far East markets. I have a lurking feeling that they could be right. By electrocash

Re: Chinese Currency

Just 10% of the portfolio is invested directly in the Chinese market. There is also a 10% investment in Hong Kong and as the Hang Seng is often used for mainland Chinese investments, the total exposure could be approaching 20%, which is probably less significant than one may suppose.

The World has demanded that the Chinese refrain from artificially holding down the value of their currency and such was the force of this persuasion, they have had little option but to agree. Paying lip service to the requests is one thing, actually taking positive steps to increase the currency value is another.

The Chinese exporting companies involved will of course find their goods becoming slightly more expensive to the rest of the world. However, a fair proportion of these companies serve the ever increasing demand of the expanding home economy.

The actual cap value of these companies will of course rise when converting into western currency values, which I hope will be translated into a higher NAV for our Investment Trust

For what it is worth, I have put forward these pretty simplistic viewpoints. I would more than welcome the comments of anyone who is a professional economist.

Re: Anyone out there?

I also have this one, my main holding since 2006 and a 'top-up' from last year. I have a rule that should a share double in value, I sell half and remain in with the remainder for the duration. I slightly bent the rule on this one, hanging in there still at +135%, but then succumbed.

I am well invested in the Far East area, both in ITs and i-shares, all of which are doing very well. I have put the sale proceeds of this one in the i-share IEMI (Emerging markets Infrastructure), which, as well as the Far East, Has a high proportion of the portolio in Latin America. Having a dividend of about 3.5%, I am hoping for a less volatile exposure to emerging markets. By electrocash

Re: Anyone out there?

The IT boards here tend to be very quiet compared to equities. One of the nice things about SST was that it was on a reasonable discount but that is no longer true. Although it has done very well in NAV terms and I am sure will continue to do so, I don't think I would add at this price, and if it goes to a premium I will probably be out until the froth clears.
