Tate & Lyle lifts profits on broad sales growth

By Louise Lucas

Tate & Lyle trounced market expectations by unveiling a 19 per cent surge in adjusted operating profit to £194m at the halfway stage, triggering a 5 per cent rally in the share price and a flurry of earnings upgrades by brokers.

The ingredients company benefited from a bigger-than-expected £19m ($30.5m) gain from byproducts, much of which is sold as animal feed. However, the increases were broad-based, with speciality food ingredients sales up 12 per cent in constant currency terms year on year in the first half.

On this topic

Tate & Lyle gains £5m from corn husk switch

The group cautioned that profits would be weighted more to the first half, as Splenda sucralose volumes reverted to “more normal levels” and the cost of restarting a mothballed plant weigh on the second half.

Tate & Lyle, having hived off sugar, is in the throes of streamlining its business and moving into higher value-added areas, as well as expanding geographically.

Javed Ahmed, chief executive, said that while the focus had historically been on Europe and North America, some 10-15 per cent of sales in the speciality food ingredients division now came from emerging markets.

“It has now become clear that emerging markets have significant potential as a driver for long-term growth, so we are beginning to build out our presence,” he said.

Sales in the six months were up 19 per cent on a constant currency basis to £1.54bn. Diluted earnings per share, on total operations, more than doubled to 37p and the dividend is being lifted 4.4 per cent to 7.1p.

Tate & Lyle, like its peers, is now engaged in negotiations over corn sugar prices. While these will continue for another two months, supply/demand dynamics – reflected in broad-brush capacity utilisation rates of 90 per cent – suggest the industry will have some leverage with buyers.

Analysts, many of whom already upgraded their numbers in September when Tate & Lyle first flagged the bigger impact of by-products – which subsequently proved higher still – said a further modest lift in consensus earnings forecasts is now likely.

Robert Dickinson at Citigroup expects a lift of around 4 per cent following a 3 per cent increase since the trading update a month ago. By SpikeyDT

Results

Well, the SP has been pointing to good results for some time and they duly arrived. Some large numbers floating around resulting in net assets actually down on last year, pension shortfall increased and div increase growth much less than earnings. Co. stresses this half unlikely to be repeated in the second half. Overall, a good performance but exceptional items will not be repeated and the SP high enough for noe. By tejo

Re: A quiet BB as an investment strategy...

I'll take a look at those thanks.

I am a bit of a contrarian investor and like to look for the undervalued stocks.

I can't think of an easy way though of finding these quieter, less volatile stocks. III used to have a list on their home page of the busiest BBs but I don't recall anything for the quietest! There is still I think a "sector heat map" which might be a good starting point.

No news may be good news in this case but where do you find "no news"!

I'll have to go back to the tried and tested methods I already use I guess... By Kathy Bennett
