Re: Who Jumped

jswarde, just to remind you that the licences issued to Ford, Toyota and GM were all, part of the legacy of MM and the intelligence published here and on other sites is that the consultancy and development work would be borne by TRK.

The obvious change that Dick made is to get NEW customers (and possibly existing customers) to have a variance in the contract terms whereby this drain on cash was diminished.

We do not know for certain that the unnamed T&B licencee is the same truck and bus maker from the project that has been running now for 10 years. I think we should assume that it is the original one but that there has been a lengthy renegotiaion of the licence to reflect the work that is required to advance the project to production intent.

With continuing reliance on consultancy fees for engineering it only suggests to TRK is no-where near as advanced as you think and imply that it is and therefore should be treated with caution.

I am deliberately bearish on the company for the simple reason that it has talked itself up too often and just not delivered.

To re-visit a criticism that I am sure was levied at me that my continuing criticism of TRK and its managers affects their status and dealings with customers or potential customers is laughable. If you really believe that whatever institution, buyer or company with an interest in dealing with TRK will read bullettin boards and take the slightest interest in the comments made therein as being factual or with any influence then I find it hilarious and almost akin to the farces written by Georges Feydeau.

Flywheels already in use in F1

Maybe not to the same scale as the proposed Flybrid system, but still useful to counter act the nay sayers. Suspension components will be mounted significantly eccentric to the car's centre of gravity. Prof Smith's quote below is a glimmer of hope too.
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns20669.html

AUGUST 21, 2008
Ingenuity still brings success in Formula 1

For years engineers have complained that the rules of Formula 1 mean that there is little room left for innovation but Cambridge University's engineering department has just revealed that this is not the case at all.

Professor Malcolm Smith, a fellow of Gonville and Caius College, created an innovative suspension system in the late 1990s and this was patented by the university. The first details were published in 2002 in the obscure Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers's publication called Transactions on Automatic Control. This was spotted by the boffins at McLaren and an exclusive deal was negotiated to allow the team to use the technology in F1. The new system was first used at the Spanish GP in 2005 and Kimi Raikkonen won.

The team used the name "J Damper" to describe the unit - in an effort to confuse the opposition - but it has now been revealed that it is actually called "an inerter". This is very different to traditional suspension systems which use springs and dampers to absorb the shocks and improve comfort and create better handling and better grip.

Tuning the suspension systems was always a question of finding a compromise but Professor Smith realised that things could be better resolved if a third component was added to the system. The inerter looks like a conventional shock absorber with an attachment at either end and a plunger moving backwards and forwards inside the main body of the device, however this then activates a flywheel which rotates in proportion to the relative displacement between the attachment points, storing rotational energy as it spins. This reduces the effects of the oscillations and thus helps the car to retain a better grip on the road.

"It's very pleasing that what began as a theoretical idea is now being used in motor sport," says Professor Smith. "Hopefully it will gradually be incorporated into other types of vehicle as well."

The deal with McLaren has now ended and Cambridge Enterprise, the University's commercialisation office, has signed a licencing agreement with Penske Racing Shocks, which will allow Penske to supply inerters to any team in F1. By grahamey

Re: Who Jumped

I agree with the Trog on most of the points he makes Elsy has been a slow learner and running his mouth off in company reports has simply underlined his and the company failings. As for the latest licensees T&B is years away and its only contribution is to give four or five engineers at Torotrak something to do whilst making Torotrak exorbitant running cost more palatable with it annual cash payment. As for the assumption that because the mystery B&T company has coughed up 7 million over four years means they are certain to go to production its a reach at best. You just have to look at the size of the annual R&D budgets for major B&T OEM to realize what they gave to Torotrak is a pittance in real terms.

Tata is still a mystery and even by Elsy estimates could be as long as four to five years away from production I personally hope for major news in this sector within 6 months.

Tractors in reality has been a dismay failure with the last licensee signed up in 2005 coupled with more delays than British rail it makes for an ugly picture. The only reason Torotrak wants an expensive JV is because the original business model has been such a failure unfortunately not enough cash to risk it.

Automotive has again been a dismal failure with the exception of Tata no new licensee since ZF remember them.

Ifinitrak needs no intro…..

If you add up the Licensee who have been, saw ,evaluated, wasted a ton of shareholder money , been talked up by Elsy and Co before they f%^)*^$&*ked off it makes for an impressive list

LG
Italian tractor
ZF
Getrag
Toyota
GM
Ford
Uzel
BMW

Compare that to the newbees and the dreadful Iseki

Tata
Carraro
Iseki
T&B
Xtrac
F1 teams

I know which list I prefer in regard to volume and royalty payments.

The truth is until news breaks that automotive is going into production and further exterior conformation about tractors reaches the market then the share price will struggle because there is nothing tangible for institutions or new investors to grasp be cause as the above list demonstrates admirably the market has seen them come and seen them go.

I also agree with Trog that I wish I had never heard of the company as an investment it has been terrible I’d have been better off getting the company section of the FT 10 years ago and sticking a few pins in whilst blind fold any result would have offered a better performance.

Grumble over as I believe that the worst is over and with the right couple of RNS the market will take the company seriously.
I cant argue with your main message that actual volume production is the key to TRK's ultimate success.

However you ask: "Why should TATA not take the same decision as almost every T1 and OEM that hold licence and just drift away?"

The one big difference between the previous Auto licensee agreements is that Tata (and the T&B licensee) have paid up front serious cash and they have agreed to pay serious cash for consultancy. This is surely a big change from the days of GM, Toyota and Ford.

OK one might presume that Tata and the T&B could ultimately write off their investment in IVT but they have made a serious commitment which they surely hope to get a return from. Your comment that " DE and his cronies have been learning v e r y slowly on the job since appointment 4 or so years ago" is just a bit childish. The Tata and T&B deals did not just arrive; they are the fruits of s e v e r a l years hard work and the stategy change implemented by the management team you seek to rubbish.

Backward Roger, I applaud Carl to have made the decision to sell out his holding in TRK. After 10 years of development, there is no evidence that volume production can be made. I do not call a pilot run of 500 units built a year or so late really counts as volume so I am quite prepared for a viscious argument on that point.

I am convinced that there are many, many contributors to this site and others who actually wish that they had never heard of Torotrak let alone been suckered into buyiong shares in the company.
The last set of managers were useless and DE and his cronies have been learning v e r y slowly on the job since appointment 4 or so years ago.

Tata Motors shares up

MUMBAI, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Shares in India's Tata Motors rose nearly 5 percent early on Thursday as investors cheered its decision to scrap a planned 30 billion rupee ($686 million) convertible preference share issue.

India's top vehicle maker said late on Wednesday it would cancel the issue due to weak stock markets, and instead raise funds by selling some investments over the next six to eight months, within the Tata group where possible.

It will now raise 42 billion rupees from two rights issues instead of 72 billion rupees from three simultaneous issues to help fund its $2.3 billion acquisition of the Jaguar and Land Rover luxury brands from Ford Motor Co (F.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz).

"This is good as the extent of fund raising through an issue of shares that will result in a dilution of equity is less now," said Ashutosh Goel, an analyst at Edelweiss Securities.

"Instead, they are putting their investment book to good use by selling stakes, instead of just earning dividends from them," said Goel, who has a "buy" rating on Tata Motors stock.

Shares in Tata Motors, which had fallen more than a quarter since since May 29 when it announced the fund raising plan, rose as much as 4.7 percent in early trade and were up 3.5 percent at 439 rupees at 0501 GMT in a weak Mumbai market.

ot/to all healthy water drinkers !!`

As Ben said :

In wine there is wisdom,
in beer there is freedom,
in water there is bacteria.
In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. Coli) - bacteria found in faeces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.

\

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whisky or gin etc) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember : Water = Poop Wine = Health

Therefore, it's better to drink wine and talk kak, than to drink water and be full of kak.

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information. I'm doing this as a public service. lol Ben

Row Over The World's Cheapest Car

A confrontation between Indian farmers and the state government is threatening the launch of the world's cheapest car - the Nano.
They allege their land was taken without giving due compensation and some farmers were forcibly evicted.
Of the 1000 acres allotted to the car manufacturer, the farmers have demanded back 400 acres which they argue are in excess of Tata's requirement.
