Re: RNS

I would imagine that Medichem have been looking at sourcing and/or manufacturing alternative products from day 1 of Tristel aquiring the manufacturing rights for the Trigene range. Medichem must surely have seen the writing on the wall following this unwelcome (for them!) development.

I can only assume that matters have come to a head sooner than Tristel imagined - hence the 'unplanned' comment from the Tristel CEO.

The $64,000 question is whether Tristel can maintain sufficient market share at significantly enhanced margins in competition with Medichem's 'alternative' products.

Given that the vast majority of the veterinary market is supplied via a handful of specialist veterinary wholesalers I do not think that Tristel will have a major problem in maintaining decent market share.

The unknown quantity is that we do not know well both Tristel & Medichem are positioned right now to continue seamlessly marketing their respective products. If Medichem do not have alternative products in place by the time their existing 'Tristel manufacured' products run out they will face a major problem. By the way their web-site is down at present - 'under reconstruction' so one must assume that something is brewing.

There is a lot of supposition here - only time will tell! By allmanbros

Re: RNS

Spot on with that suggestion, Allmanbros.
The market does not seem to appreciate this RNS with a 6% fall in SP.

What confuses me is the "unplanned" phrase. Was this precipitated by some force beyond Tristel's control. Have they been caught unawares and therefore not in a position to market directly, effectively? The short term disruption statement suggests that. How do you see this affecting the bottom line?
RNS

As I suggested back in 2010 - Tristel have dumped Medichem and will go it alone. Here is my original post:

"Rick Hayman's company, Medichem International (Marketing) Ltd did not receive one penny from Tristel. The manufacturing rights for Medichem products were purchased from Medichem International (Manufacturing) Ltd. This is a completely separate entity. I think you will find that a guy called Tom Allsworth was the major beneficiary of the £2.4m purchase. Now that Tristel own the manufacturing rights (and know-how) for Medichem products, what is to stop them:

1) Squeezing Medichem (Marketing) on price as Tristel effectively hold all the cards. Medichem have nowhere else to go unless they choose to sell alternative formulations manufactured elsewhere.

or

2) Launch their own brands based on the formulations they now own (eg. Tristel Animal Health Disinfectant etc.) and freeze Medichem out altogether. Once Tristel have recouped their £2.4 million from product sales to Medichem they could take them on head to head in the market. Medichem are a minor company in the scheme of things and woul struggle to compete with Tristel, particularly if they have to source alternative formulations to sell under the Trigene banner.

Just a thought!"

Best For Bogies?

RNS Number : 4142A
Tristel PLC
30 March 2012

TRISTEL plc

Results of Clinical Study

Tristel plc ("Tristel"), the manufacturer of infection control, contamination control and hygiene products, announces that at the 11th Congress for German Hospital Hygiene held in Berlin in late March, the results of a clinical study of the Tristel Wipes System were presented by Mr Brandon Hitchcock FRACS, Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgeon at Tauranga Hospital, New Zealand.

In a randomised, single-blind comparison of the effectiveness of the high-level disinfectants Tristel Wipes, Cidex OPA (Johnson & Johnson) and Perasafe (Du Pont) for use with flexible nasendoscopes, the study, which involved 195 patients, concluded that none of the disinfectant agents proved harmful to patients.

However, in terms of ease of use and user safety, the Tristel Wipes were statistically superior to the other two disinfection methods, using certain well-recognised scoring measures. Furthermore, the Tristel Wipes System achieved the fastest turnaround time for the instrument disinfected (2.7 minutes versus 27.4 minutes for Cidex OPA) and eliminated any requirement for capital expenditure, making its use superior as measured by the economic cost end-point.

The Tristel Wipes System is unique. It uses the Company's patented chlorine dioxide chemistry and is designed specifically for the decontamination of heat-sensitive, non-lumened instruments. The system comprises a pre-clean wipe to remove surface soiling, a sporicidal wipe that kills harmful organisms within 30 seconds, and a rinse wipe.

Tristel CEO, Paul Swinney, commented: "This is the second in-use clinical study that has demonstrated the superiority of a Tristel instrument disinfectant (in this case the Wipes System) over other, longer-established methods. When it comes to instrument disinfection, there is in fact very little published data generated from the actual use of products in the clinical setting. The findings of these two studies involving the innovative products Tristel have developed for ENT, urology and cardiology, help explain the 55% growth in their sales that we achieved in our first half."

Re: Results

Hmm, as per my last analysis ( http://www.iii.co.uk/investment/detail/?display=discussion&code=cotn%3ATSTL.L&threshold=0&it=le&action=detail&id=8203289 ) my major problem is still the ongoing dilution. They are spending cash like water, fine (for the company) as long as they can continue to raise cash from equity at reasonable amounts, but I suspect they can only do that trick once more without showing real profitability growth. And not really all that great for existing holders given the large dilution.

With current numbers, the underlying profitability is at 3p eps, which implies a 1.3p dividend, but I don't think they'll make that next year as it implies full upswing in sales and cost controls being tight, and they have consistently disappointed on both fronts there. I would forecast closer to 2p eps (0.9p dividend). The five year forecast of 4p eps is still reasonable (though now one year later), if they break their addiction to spending equity. Not compelling numbers for me, and I suspect the price will drift downward, and that the half year update won't look all that good (after stripping out the R&D relief).

This really needs management to get spending under control without affecting growth. I can't see that happening quickly. By Tentative Predator

Growth Investor-Miles Nolan

Tristel HOLD
24/10/2011 Miles Nolan
http://www.growthcompany.co.uk/recommendations/1663838/tristel.thtml

Shares in decontamination experts Tristel (TSTL) have almost halved from a year ago, which is largely as a result of a scaling back of profit forecasts due to its expansion efforts.

Tristel has doubled manufacturing capacity at its Cambridge site, and has also built a new clean room. Finance director Liz Dixon admits 'its been a year of spend'. Indeed, a recruitment drive has pushed headcount up by 30 people to 90, with new sales, marketing and production specialists joining. This investment, though a positive step, has swelled the annual cost base to nearer £5.8m, from £3.8m in 2010.

In the year to June, sales rose 6% to £9.3m, however the pre-tax profit line slumped 70% to £508,000. As expected, the endoscopy disinfectant business is falling as equipment manufacturers work harder on forcing clients to use their own products.

Tristel manufactures a range of high-performance disinfectants, however it has recently assembled products under the brand of Crystel, which encompass third party products from pharmaceutical and personal care companies. With global appeal for these high margin products, Tristel should be well placed as it already sells into 24 countries via distributors.

Direct sales into China have proved a slow burn, however brokers expect revenues of £78,000 in 2010/11 to be nearer £600,000 next year. Progress in Germany is also looking good, as is Australia and New Zealand. Recently appointed non-executive Chris Samler was a former CEO of Weston Medical, so brings good experience - particularly as the challenge for Tristel is to broaden its customer base.

Broker finnCap expects 2012 to be second-half weighted, with annual pre-tax profits of £1m, and adjusted EPS of 3p in prospect. Current trading is ahead of management expectations, but for now, as Tristel fills its capacity, we rate the shares as a hold.
