Re: Share price

Warbaby43,
I have always felt that our reserves of coal are exactly that; reserves and using fossil fuels from elsewhere is both cheaper and maintains our reserves for a rainy day or two ( 200 years ). As governments are able to dictate how electricity is generated, the use of coal as a source of energy can be kept to a minimum and subsequently our long term ability to provide our own energy can be protected.
Only my thoughts on the subject of the ' UK ' coal ' reserves '. By 1mustjfdi

Re: Share price

Not at all sure that the existence or otherwise of "this shale revolution" would have made any difference. Notwithstanding an EU opinion survey of public attitudes towards energy sources indicating that 54% of Brits had a broadly favourable towards coal (surpassed only by the Poles) the case for coal has been and is absent from any public debate on energy and the coal industry remains under unremittingly hostile attack from our London ruling class.

The bizarre thing is that while opinion surveys indicate that Joe Public wants cheaper energy rather than hyper expensive so-called "green" energy and coal remains by a margin the cheapest source of electricity, the case for coal is never publicly made so the industry goes entirely friendless in parliament and in the media.

Indeed, the only amusing feature of the 2011 Annual Results was to see Jonson Cox railing against Government energy policy while not being willing to spend a brass farthing on making coal's case to the public. By warbaby43

Re: Share price

Yes, Warbaby, agree with you. The difference between 120USD/tonne and 87USD/tonne is massive for the UKC. Assuming that the production this year will be 6.6mln tonnes, this ARA price reduction amounts to getting approx. 130 mln GBP less in revenue, which is a phonomenal difference for the UKC with its current market value and with its current difficulties.
I wish this shale gas revolution had been delayed for a few years. By Vita Bella

Re: Share price

What may also be weighing on the SP is the coal price. At the end of last week last year ARA stood at $123.40 with futures indicating 2012 at $128.03, 2013 at $130.75 and 2014 at $133.20. At the end of last week, however, ARA was $87.20 with 2013 at $101.43 and 2014 at $108.05.

Throw into the equation, large over supply of US coal with production being heavily cut back and suspension of mining, Colombian production surging 14.6% in Q1 and China carrying that much thermal coal that they are looking to re-export surplus stock to Japan and S. Korea. All in all a very difficult backdrop for Mr Cox's negotiations with the generators both for the restructuring and for forward supply terms.

All of which underlines again UKC's very high mining costs, £384m pre depreciation and exceptionals, over half of which are, of course, labour costs. At these coal prices and present levels of production there must be serious doubt as to whether UKC can afford its workforce. However, from looking at the Vauxhall Ellesmere Port 94% approved deal last week, it would seem that even Scousers are more realistic than miners. By warbaby43

Share price

I believe that one of the main reasons for current sliding of the share price is lack of clarifty and exact implications for shareholders from the forthcoming restructuring. Not many people want to buy when UKC stated that share dilition is possible but the extent and details are not clear. The company results and prospects correspond to a higher share price.

At this time low share price is a problem. It should be limiting restructuring options of UKC unless existing shareholders are diluted substantially.

I am starting to think that it was a mistake of UKC management to announce that restruction with dilution of shareholdings is possible and did not give exact details. That alone introduced uncertainty and put downward pressure on the share price, which in turn is limiting options for restructuring. By Vita Bella
