Follow our Step by Step guide to Transfer your ISA

What is a transfer?

A transfer is when you change the administrator of your shares to a different one. Transferring shares will not result in any tax liability or any difference to your holding. If you own share certificates, transferring them will allow you to trade your shares online, which is far cheaper, and benefit from four different dividend handling options. All transfers in are FREE.

What is the difference between transferring investments as cash or as shares?

Transferring shares as cash

The cash transfer method is when your current provider sells your investment and the cash from the sale is transferred to Interactive Investor. Once the transfer is complete you have the choice to reinvest in the same share or to reinvest in a new investment at Interactive Investor. There will be dealing charges to pay when you purchase your new investments.

Transferring shares as stock

The stock transfer method (also known as in-specie) is when the name of the nominee manager is changed from your current providers name and re-registered as Interactive Investor. There is no change when you transfer by the stock transfer method. Please note that there may be transfer out charges to pay with your current broker.

What if I have paper share certificates?

If you own share certificates, transferring them will allow you to trade shares online or by phone. We will effectively change your holding from a paper-based one to an online nominee one.

Online trading in shares will be far cheaper (although you can still trade with us by phone at no extra cost) and you will also benefit from four dividend handling options. Additionally, the administration of all corporate actions and rights issues are made much easier for you (we will give you a clear explanation of your options). And you can transfer in all your paper certificates to us for FREE.
