Aer Lingus' total passenger numbers in October 2009 were 902,000 a decrease of 0.2% compared to October 2008. Short haul passengers were 821,000, a 3.3% increase on October 2008 and long haul passengers were 81,000, a 25.7% decrease on October 2008. DUBLIN, Oct 18 (Reuters) - Ireland's Aer Lingus must push through severe cost savings announced earlier this month if it is to survive, the country's Transport Minister and 25 percent stake-holder Noel Dempsey said on Sunday. `Aer Lingus, which has been rapidly been burning through its cash reserves, is to cut almost a fifth of its 4,000 staff to reduce annual operating costs by 97 million euros ($145 million) by 2011.` `However, its shareholder structure has been a stumbling block to reform in the past and could hamper the implementation of the plan, which the airline wants to complete by Nov. 18.` `"Aer Lingus is faced with a very fundamental question - survival or a continuation for perhaps maybe two years. I don't think there's any choice any more," Transport Minister Noel Dempsey told national broadcaster RTE.` `"There is little doubt in my mind having seen how the cash has been burned up in Aer Lingus over the last 12 months that unless they get the savings of up to 100 million euros, we will not be talking about an Aer Lingus in a few years time."` `Irish rival Ryanair has a nearly 30 percent stake in Aer Lingus, while the government and Aer Lingus staff, past and present, own 25 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Unions are also represented on the airline's board.` `Aer Lingus said it was bracing itself for possible strikes after the SIPTU and UNITE trade unions, which represent ground staff and technical workers at the company, opposed the cuts.` `The IMPACT trade union which represents hundreds of Aer Lingus cabin crew and pilots said the proposals were as severe as expected and that it would consider its response.` `"I think they should sit down and should talk ... 	Comment: O’Leary still circling around Aer Lingus 27 September 2009 "As Christoph Mueller, the new chief executive of Aer Lingus, steels himself for the first of many battles with unions over radical plans to strip out €100million in costs, he can at least console himself that his noisy peer across the car park at Dublin Airport will give him a little breathing space. Last week, Michael O’Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, used his airline’s agm to play down speculation about a third attempt to take over Aer Lingus. O’Leary said it was ‘‘highly unlikely’’ that a third offer would be made any time soon, but he was uncharitable in outlining his reasons why. According to O’Leary, Aer Lingus remains doomed to stumble through the tough, recession-filled years that lie ahead, slowly but surely eroding its cash reserves, while it beavers away in its efforts to return to profitability. Once the cash runs out, Aer Lingus will, in O’Leary’s mind, need its shareholders to stump up and ensure that its planes can remain in the sky. And that could be its downfall as an independent entity. Attempts to tap shareholders for cash will not be helped by Aer Lingus’s complicated ownership. With a cash-strapped government holding 25 per cent of the airline and unions and staff (whose pockets are hardly overflowing) holding 15 per cent, Mueller would be unwise to expect them to follow their money in a future fundraising. Which leaves a relatively small number of institutional shareholders - and Ryanair. O’Leary would be only too pleased to inject more money into his domestic rival - but only in return for control. Mueller will hope it won’t come to that and that staff will recognise the urgency of Aer Lingus getting its house in order. But the doomsday clock is already ticking. 	## Aer Lingus has slashed the price of its business class seats to E400 to the US - a seventh of the regular price. In a further indication of plunging premium seat sales Etihad Airlines is selling two business class tickets for the price of one. Airlines have been struggling to fill seats in its business class section over the last year. The Irish airline, which will soon release its newest cost restructuring plan, reported a loss of €93 million ($132 million), compared to a €23.4 million ($34.2) loss last year. Sales fell 12 percent to €555 ($812) million, with average fares down 17 percent. Aer Lingus’ new chief executive, Christoph Mueller, has said that the airline needs an “amputation,” not “cosmetic surgery” to reduce costs, and that long-haul flights to the U.S., especially those from Shannon, are under fire. Transatlantic services accounted for around €60 million of first-half losses. Mueller stated that he appreciates the “national importance” of Aer Lingus’ American routes, but said that his airline is “not a charity,” suggesting that the Shannon to New York route has only survived due to pressure from the Irish government.
