27-01-10	DRS Data & Research - Re Contract Announcement	HUG
DRS Data & Research Services plc is pleased to announce that it has signed a further agreement to October 2014 with the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA), the largest English Examinations Board, to provide AQA with automated examination services using DRS' e-Marker® technology to electronically capture marks from candidates' scripts. AQA and DRS have been working together since 2005 to improve the quality and efficiency of examination processing using e-Marker®. Andrew Bird, AQA's Deputy Director General comments: "We are delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with DRS. This will ensure that we can keep delivering the best possible technological support to our assessments, to the ultimate benefit of all our learners." DRS' Chief Executive Tony Lee adds, "DRS is proud to be AQA's partner in the successful delivery of examination marking. We are very much looking forward to continuing our relationship with AQA and to further developing e-Marker® to meet the changing requirements of examination marking". 	Well the exam results are out and no news is good news i.e. no c*ck-ups pointing to DRS for once. The figures suggest that the e-marker stuff actually works very well and has been extended to cope with long essay style answers. e-marker allows examiners to mark just one essay style question on a script (for instance). It is producing a "production line" type model for marking. With education accounting for about 80% of turnover and e-marker about 70% of the education turnover, DRS is dangerously exposed to any "wimps" at the AQA examining board. Given the rest of DRS is just plain junk, you would expect somebody out there in the education market to buy DRS just for e-marker and put the rest of it out of its misery More \| View thread (2) \| Respond \| Login to Vote up

	I suspect the problem with this company is that it simply failed to move with the times having got hung up on a technologies that belong in the arc. I used to work for this outfit many years ago and at the time they went public there was just a chance (tiny chance) they could have adopted a different vision. IMHO the middle management was poorly educated from a business angle, and the executive somewhat lacking in any fresh vision or initiative. The company got hung up like an old gramophone needle. Document reading it was and document reading it remains. What is really sad is that DRS has had a number of great opportunities to win through in some high profile contracts like the Mayoral and Scottish elections which could have made a significant difference to their public standing. Unfortunately they both backfired quite in quite spectacular fashion. Certainly I had (and have) great respect for MB, one of the cleverest guys I have worked with. However he must be very disappointed to have left the business performing so badly. PS - I am not a shareholder within this company and have no intention of becoming one in the foreseeable future. 	The welsh windbag, together with is Missus, should be able to throw the odd 5 grand at DRS. Kinnock gets about 112 grand in pension as a former MP and Euro commissioner. Glenys only gets 48 grand from the European parliament pension pot (plus one when she did a "real" job as a teacher). Of course Glenys is catching up fast, she is Minister for Europe and thus scoring £83K a year. Plus, of course, entitlement to another pension eventually. Kinnock is scoring 25 grand from DRS, up from 20 grand the previous year. So the extra 5 grand he scored from DRS this year (a year in which DRS went into free fall under the leadership of the morons on the board) he has eventually taken in shares.
