Thanks for the reply. As you say, the cash back on the phone, council tax and utilty bills more than pay for the monthly fee. You can also get the credit card free for the fist year when you open a 1-2-3 account! More cash back opportunities! Just hope Santander don't change the rules once they have us all hooked! I cannot see from where. Ongoing trading is pretty static, whilst the scale of the Spanish bad debts has still to be recognized in the accounts - though it probably is in the share price. Paying out these divis in excess of eps and then recouping some of the damage by issuing shares as specie is financial engineering of the worst sort. Nothing like retained earnings to give confidence. Just look at Lloyds Q1 to see the relationship between retentions at last and a surging SP. I too was persuaded to open a 123 debit account, as stated 3% interest on a balance £3000 to £20,000 I think that you have to pay in a minimum of £500 a month (not sure) and of course there is that £2.00 a month fee and you must have direct debits on the account but the good thing is that direct debits for council tax, gas and leccy and telecoms, certainly in my case more than pay the £2.00 fee. Anything over £20,000 is no interest, so you have to keep an eye on your balance. Also Santander have the Esaver account, for the first year paying 1.5% on everything, no fee but there is tax to pay on these accounts. These accounts look good on paper but don't forget inflation, cash in the bank at the moment is losing value, much better to keep a small reserve fund and put the rest in a good share like Santander with regular dividends.
