Re: Good set of results

Radaking, I think long term buy back of shares has got to be in the interest of existing shareholders. If I, as a shareholder think the shares are too cheap I can buy them, if I have the money to do so (or if I don't feel I already have too many). If the company has spare cash then it can reward shareholders with a div (short term) or invest back in the company buying back those cheap shares (long term).
It increases the value of the remaining shares in issue and that should ultimately be reflected in the share price. By Roger Baron

Debenhams to outsource its call centre activities

Debenhams puts 230 staff into consultation as it outsources customer services

RETAIL WEEK
4 APRIL 2012

Department store Debenhams has put 230 staff at its Taunton contact centre into consultation as it outsources the function. The retailer has taken the action in the face of rising enquiries from its growing multichannel customer base. It said it expected call volumes to grow rapidly over the next three years.

Debenhams will outsource the contact centre operation to contractor Capita, which is based in Leeds. The department store said the move had not been an easy decision and follows a strategic review into how to deal with increasing volumes of enquiries. Debenhams will offer all staff the opportunity to transfer across to Capita. By vpascalg

"Debenhams is a potential takeover candidate"

The Telegraph
23 March 2012

Strategists at Barclays Capital argued that with “favourable debt market conditions” and “record high cash levels on balance sheets”, the market could see a pick-up in takeover activity. Using criteria such as market capitalisation and sales growth, BarCap selected 30 potential takeover candidates, including a baker’s dozen from Britain.

Among the London-listed stocks that BarCap thought could prove a takeover target were familiar names such as ITV. The broadcaster has been intermittently mooted as a possible target of private equity buyers. ITV rose 1.15 to 87.95p.

BarCap also thought that retailers such as Debenhams and Home Retail Group could be targeted, as well as high street bookmaker Ladbrokes, up 0.9 to 157p. Debenhams lost 1.45 to 78.5p and Home Retail eased 0.1 to 123p. With shares in the latter sliding over the last year, it has previously been suggested that it could attract the attentions of a predator.

"Debenhams continues to be given the benefit of the doubt. Self-help measures have propelled a group recovery, with moves overseas and online further supporting investor sentiment. With the valuation still seen as reasonable and hopes of a share buy-back persisting, market consensus denotes a buy."
"Sales were slightly better than expected. This performance stems from having a differentiated strategy and tight supply chain, stock and cost management." By vpascalg

Comments from analysts and CEO

Thisismoney.co.uk & Reuters
20 March 2012

ORIEL SECURITIES:

"This is an encouraging close to the half and suggests that management’s focus on improving the quality of the range is indeed paying off. This is a good start to Michael Sharp’s tenure as CEO. Robust trading is likely to encourage management to start its buyback programme over the next couple of months which is likely to support the price. Overall management continues to do the right things for this business and we expect Debenhams to continue to outperform the wider market. That said, progress from here is likely to require some investment in staff and stores and we stay with our add recommendation."

PEEL HUNT:

"There may be some disappointment that the share buyback was not mentioned in today's update, although the details were not expected until the announcement of half-year results in April. Certainly, the additional six weeks of trading through Easter will give a better context of the strength in consumer sentiment over the intervening period. While retail sector share prices have enjoyed a strong start to 2012, certainly ahead of the macroeconomic data (disposable income is still falling year on year), the robust level of trading and the prospect of improving margins in the second half give confidence that earnings forecasts have hit the nadir."

ESPIRITO SANTO:

"Given the volatility in the fashion market in February, we think this is a strong update from Debenhams that is likely to represent outperformance versus the market. Management is not seeing anything in the market yet to suggest an upturn in consumer demand. There is no comment on gross margin [in the press release], but we expect flat full-year guidance to be maintained."

NUMIS:

"There are lingering concerns about the impact you have by continually discounting your brand and not having enough third-party brands.”

CEO MICHAEL SHARP:

[on the strong LFL sales growth in the first two months of 2012] "This has been driven by a very strong January sale at a time when customers are looking for bargains and driven by the strength of new season product ranges."

"Gross margins fell 30 basis points for the first two months of the year, but gross margin guidance for the year remains flat."

"Selling price inflation was about 5 percent in the six months to March 3 but I expect it to abate in the coming six months, particularly towards July and August. What typically happens is that prices take longer to come down than they do to go up." By vpascalg
