Ghana

Ghana has introduced new tax laws for mining companies. The tax rate has increased from 25% to 35%. In addition losses from one mining operation can´t be offset against profits in another. Capital allowance has been decreased to 20% per annum.

Luckily we have a tax holiday until 2015 but I hope the changes are not the start of a squese on the mining companies. A while back I listened to a speach by a mining exec who was sure the African states would increase the taxation/fees etc on mining companies to get a bigger piece of the pie. Lets hope it stops here. By pog1234

fairfax view

from fairfax last monday:-

Conclusion: Good progress is being achieved at Goldplat's first brownfield gold mine - production is in line with targets. A meaningful contribution from the gold mining operation is not expected till 2013 as underground development continues and plant capacity is expanded. We are currently assuming 4,500 oz of gold production for FY 2013 and 7,500 oz for FY 2014.

With a strongly performing gold recovery business being boosted by revenues from gold mining, Goldplat offers significant upside from current levels. Having a self-funded expansion programme both in terms of gold recovery and gold production, the company is well positioned compared to other companies that need to raise finance to fund their growth programmes.

The stock is trading on a PE of 4x for 2012 and 3.2 x 2013 and with no debt has an EV/EBITDA multiple of 3.5x for 2012 and 2.3x 2013 based on our forecasts.
Our full initiation research note written on 26 March 2012 is available.
As we all know this has flattered to deceive over the years.
I wonder if we are now coming to the point where this may change.
Reasons :
1 ) Recent Directors buys
2) Maybe SP has bottomed and is due to rise again ?
3) I think GDP is hugely undervalued at a market cap of £20m.
It has consistently grown in profit for the last 5 years consecutively, based on its gold recovery operations, and with Kilamapesa production now on stream, I strongly believe that the half year to June 30th will show most impressive results.

interview with demetri from minesite

This article is two months old and was originally from minesite, It is an interview with demetri:-

March 13, 2012

Goldplat Joins The Ranks Of The African Gold Miners, And Opens Up Multiple Paths To Further Production Growth.

By Alastair Ford

“So you’re a miner now”, says Minesite, sitting down in a small office in Cheapside for a cup of peppermint tea with Demetri Manolis, the chief executive of GOLDPLAT . Demetri’s not long put out Goldplat’s interim results, and among the bullet-pointed highlights, though not yet central to the £2 million operating profit, was news that the company has poured its first gold at the Kilimapesa mine in Kenya.

Strictly, the gold pour came after the period end, this January, but the prominence given to the event is warranted as it marks the beginning of a major transition for the company. Hitherto, Goldplat’s gold recovery business, which extracts gold from a variety of mine waste material, has been the sole source of cashflow. But no longer. From here on in, the contribution from mining proper is set to increase.

Not that Demetri is content to let that bland introductory comment from Minesite pass unremarked. “I’ve been a miner for twenty years”, comes back his quickfire response. “But if you want to call Goldplat a miner now, I guess you could say that. We sold more than 1,000 ounces of gold from January.” Which isn’t bad going, given that the company’s mining license was only granted the previous November. The plan now is to push production up towards an initial 10,000 ounces per year, at a cost of US$700 per ounce, while further development work continues.

Later in the year, Demetri hopes to put out an update that will take the resource at Kilimapesa past the 500,000 ounces mark, as drilling continues at the project, and development of a new adit gets underway. Will there be an increase to that projected 10,000 ounce rate at some later stage? “We don’t know yet”, says Demetri. But he doesn’t rule it out.

At the moment the backbone of the company is still the gold recovery operations in South Africa and Ghana, and these businesses will last, says the commentary accompanying the interim results, “as long as gold is mined in South Africa and Ghana”. No worries about mine life or renewing resources here. In the six months to December these produced 15,404 ounces of gold between them, up by nearly 11 per cent on the corresponding period the previous year. In the past, there was some talk that the company’s South African business was largely mature, while the real growth potential lay in Ghana, and opening up the market in the wider region. The West African opportunities remain, but growth in South Africa is now back on the table too.

The company is now assessing the potential of processing tailings from its South African recovery operations. “We’ll do it hydrolically”, says Demetri, “with water guns, and then we’ll pump it to our plant”. Following extensive testwork, he estimates that there’s around half a million tonnes of material grading around three grams per tonne that could be re-processed once the decision is taken. The next step is a bulk sample, but if the results from that come back positive the company will be able to move pretty quickly. “It will cost around £150,000 to £200,000 to start”, says Demetri, “and it will have an impact immediately”. He reckons it could be up and running by December.

And that’s not the only opportunity for growth in South African that Goldplat has been cultivating. Following a deal with Central Rand Gold, the company is pressing ahead with plans to recommence production from two old mines in the West Rand area, and to process the resultant ore at its existing recovery operation. The idea, says Demetri, “is to access close to surface underground workings, and try to do high grade mining at lower volumes. In the old times they mined very, very high grade, and I don’t think they mined everything there.” So the stage is set for a By 5c0tt

goldplat/rand refinery alliance

Great update,

It is worth noting the strategic alliance that we have with rand refinery that was signed back in july 2007 which states (assuming it is still in place):-

The agreement with Rand Refinery is a strategic alliance, under which Goldplat has first right of refusal to process all Rand Refinery's by-products not suitable for its own refining process. In turn, Rand Refinery, which already refines the bullion produced by Goldplat in South Africa, has exclusive rights to refine Goldplat's Ghanaian production.

Rand refinery has accepted all gold from kilimapesa so far.

An excerpt from rand refineries 2011 report states this:-

There are significant volumes of materials that Rand Refinery is unable to treat economically and
that have accumulated on site over the last five to seven years. In 2011, therefore, we identified
potential partners that are able to process these materials more economically. We are focusing
on completing the treatment of all these materials off site in the next two years, which will have
a significant positive effect on our precious metal loans.

This should give us a lot to process should we be able to take it on!!

Also at the time of the alliance being signed with rand, an agreement was
signed with anglo gold ashanti which states:-

The contract with AngloGold Ashanti, which runs for an indefinite period, includes by-products comprising of woodchips, rubber and steel mill liners, oils and greases from all AngloGold Ashanti's sites at both the Vaal River and the West Wits areas.

Anglo gold ashanti is the major shareholder at rand refinery.

Rand states that it will only deal with ethical mines - and they are buying the
gold from kilimapesa. Says it all really.

1,138 metres drilled at Kilimapesa Hill target - confirmed extension of ore body in depth and up to 1.5km on strike to the east

Commenced Phase 2 drilling comprising 660 metres at Red Ray target designed to follow up the positive results from Phase 1 - strike length of mineralisation expected to increase to 2.5km

Underground mining development progressing as planned

Stopes established to allow for full stoping operations

New adit D being developed at Kilimapesa Hill target to further expand the ore resource

Goldplat CEO Demetri Manolis said, "We continue to drive Kilimapesa forward and establish it as a profitable mining operation through defined development programmes aimed at expanding the resource base towards 500,000 ounces and increasing gold production towards 10,000 ounces per annum. In line with this, we have raised its JORC-compliant ore resource to 3,133,613 tonnes at 2.46 g/t gold for 247,484 ounces of gold and aim to increase this further through underground development and additional drilling programmes. We also continue to develop the underground operations as well as the plant capacity. These advances bode well for the Company as we focus on further developing Kilimapesa, our first gold mining operation, in tandem with our two highly profitable gold recovery operations in South Africa and Ghana, and our two brownfield gold development projects in Burkina Faso and Ghana, to fulfil our strategy to become a significant producer and multi mine development company in Africa." By suki the dog
