These look good to me, given the exceptional circumstances of the year gone by in MENA. Reading between the lines, revenue is strongly up and expected to grow, but margins are down as the new product mix kicks in. Given a fair wind, i would not be surprised to find revenue up 20% and profits even more in the next year. Definitely worth tucking away in my opinion. DYOR etc. By middler2

Dip in sp

Not sure whether the recent drop in sp is Greece-inspired or linked to the following (or a bit of both):
The FDA has told West-Ward Pharmaceuticals (a Hikma subsidiary) that it needs to fix manufacturing and testing issues that have permitted the release of lithium and digoxin tablets that fail size specifications.
The Feb. 3 letter says the inadequate testing by the contract manufacturer at its Eatontown, NJ, plant allows the release of batches of lithium carbonate extended release tablets, USP 450 mg, that are outside specifications for thickness and hardness. The company needs a follow-up investigation to determine the root cause of the problem, according to the letter.
The FDA warning letter notes West-Ward agreed to suspend production of the lithium tablets while it assesses the process changes. The warning also takes West-Ward to task for not indicating what it would do for batches of the drug already released that may be out of tolerances.
The FDA adds that if any of the corrective actions taken by West-Ward would result in decreased production, it should contact CDER's Drug Shortages Program immediately.

Climbs on solid growth

Hikma Pharmaceuticals climbs on solid growth
By Darshini Shah | Fri, 04/11/2011 - 11:18

Hikma Pharmaceuticals (HIK) has trimmed gross margin expectations for the full year to 46%, while maintaining its top-line and net profit guidance.

In its third-quarter trading update released on Friday, the company confirmed that the US generics division, which makes up about 18% of total sales, remained the weak link as industry-wide pricing pressure was offsetting solid volume growth. Revenue guidance for the division was cut from $160 million (c£100 million) to $155 million, with a "low double-digit" versus "low teens" pre-tax profit margin.

Revenue growth in the branded division was 9% for the nine months, from 3% in the first half. The acceleration in growth was due to the disruption in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The company confirmed that full-year growth would be about 7% due to tough comparables in the fourth quarter.

Injectables saw "strong" double-digit sales with a "significant improvement" in operating margin. On the recently acquired Multi-source Injectables (MSI) business, Hikma guided to full-year revenues of between $100 million and $105 million, with the business breaking even in the second half of 2011.

"The excellent performance of our global injectables business, our rapid progress in integrating the MSI business in the US and the resilience of our operations in MENA demonstrate the strength of our diversified business model," commented chief executive Said Darwazah.

Preliminary results for the 12 months to 31 December will be announced on 14 March. By SpikeyDT

Investors were told to stop worrying about the Arab Spring and pile into Hikma yesterday. The Jordan-based generic drugs maker was driven up 35p to 665p after Morgan Stanley argued that despite recent conflicts, the pharmaceuticals market in North Africa and the Middle East remained on course to soar.

Upgrading his rating to "overweight", the broker's analyst Peter Verdult said that the region – which currently provides almost 60 per cent of Hikma's revenues – contained "some of the fastest-growing pharma markets with relatively high entry barriers".

The company has already said that despite some disruption to its operations, it expects to benefit from the fallout of the Arab Spring, claiming governments will be forced to listen more closely to their citizens and subsequently increase spending on healthcare.

Hikma's quest to expand in the region took a further step earlier in the month after it agreed to buy more than 60 per cent of Morocco's Promopharm for $111.2m (£69.8m). Mr Verdult said the acquisition "reinforces the growth story" and estimated that this year it would contribute $55m worth of sales. By SpikeyDT

This mid-cap firm has exciting growth prospects, and is at a nice price.
Most of us here at the Fool, including me, have been banging on about the attractions of the UK's pharma titans, GlaxoSmithKline (LSE: GSK) and AstraZeneca (LSE: AZN), for I don't know how long.
Still, maybe low price/earnings (P/E) ratios, great cash generation, and chunky dividends don't float your boat. Or maybe you see these world-class businesses keeling over the so-called 'patent cliff' along with their expiring patents.
If so, you might be interested in a go-go growth mid-cap pharma company. It's on a high P/E and low yield; but has no patent issues and I reckon it's great value right now.
Right said PEG
In an article last August, I took a look at two companies in the pharma sector: Shire (LSE: SHP) and Hikma Pharmaceuticals (LSE: HIK).
At that time, Shire was on an attractive P/E to growth (PEG) ratio, while Hikma was only fairly-priced on the same basis.
Since then, Shire's shares, which were trading at 1,387p, have risen over 50%. Hikma's, which were trading at 735p, peaked at 900p in January, but are now languishing at a 12-month low of 681p.
The PEG is a useful measure for looking at companies with P/Es in the higher range. It gives us a way to judge whether the high P/E is justified by forecast earnings growth. A PEG of 1 represents fair value: above 1 is on the pricey side; below 1 is on the cheaper.
Last year, Shire was on a sub-1 PEG based on 2010-11 forecast earnings growth. Today, based on 2011-12 forecast earnings growth, the positions are reversed. Hikma has the more appealing PEG:
Company	Share
price	Forecast
P/E
2011	Forecast
P/E
2012	Forecast
EPS growth
2011-12	PEG
Hikma	681p	21	16	30%	0.5
Shire	2,099p	20	18	16%	1.1
Source: Digital Look 1/8/11
Who are Hikma?
Hikma Pharmaceuticals was founded in Jordan in 1978 by Samih Darwazah, who abandoned a 12-year globe-trotting career as a marketing manager with US pharma group Eli Lilly to strike out on his own.
He built Hikma from a one-product firm -- a bacterial infection-fighting drug -- into an international multi-million pound business, which was floated on the London stock exchange in 2005.
Currently valued at £1.3bn, and listed in the FTSE 250, the company has a record of doubling its turnover every four years, through a combination of organic growth and acquisitions.
Hikma has three business divisions:
Branded generics and in-licensed products focused on the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region;

Oral generics focused on the US; and

Injectable generics, sold in both MENA and the US, and also in Europe.
The geographical breakdown of group turnover was as follows for the year ended December 2010:
Region	% of turnover
MENA	61
USA	28
Europe (and other)	11
A £5bn company?
As you might deduce from Hikma's regional bias and its weak share price this year, the market has been spooked by the so-called Arab Spring.
Hikma has seen some disruption to its business from the civil unrest and uprisings in various parts of the MENA region. Nevertheless, it still expects current year turnover from MENA to be around 7% ahead of last year.
Hikma has successfully steered itself through numerous wars and conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa over the past three decades. Disruption to, or loss of, some of its markets at times have failed to hold back its impressive rate of growth for very long.
Not surprisingly, with its prominent market position and local knowledge, Hikma is on the radar of Western drugs companies, who are increasingly looking to emerging economies for their future growth.
However, the founding family have resisted all overtures for the time being, and are focused on achieving their self-set goal of turning Hikma into a £5bn company.

IAG non-exec opens account with £2.5m purchase
Date: Thursday 26 May 2011

Non-executive chairman Cesar Alierta Izuel has opened his account in British Airways owner International Consolidated Airlines in a big way, spending nearly £2.5m on shares.

He took 165,000 shares at €2.82 a time, 729,575 at €2.84 and 105,425 at €2.75.

Izuel has been on the board of IAG since the company formed from the merger of British Airways and Spanish airline Iberia began trading at the start of the year. He has been chairman of telecommunications company Telefonica, Spain’s biggest company by market capitalisation, since 2000.

IAG reported an improved performance in the first quarter as it unveiled its first results since coming into existence.

The company posted a pre-tax loss of €47m (£28.5m) for the three months to 31 March, much narrower than the €273m deficit that would have been seen in the same period the previous year had the two companies existed as one entity. Revenues soared to €3.64bn from €3.15bn.

But high oil prices are a big worry for the company. Fuel costs were up by 30% at €1.13bn.

“We have been working hard to establish IAG over the past few months and are confident that we are on track to deliver our synergy targets,” said chief executive Wilie Walsh.

Finals

Without doubt a solid set of numbers with sales up 14.8%, operating profit up 25.9%, operating margin increased to 18.5% from 16.8% and EPS up 25.2%.

The concerns are expressed in their statement: "...Recent events in the MENA region, particularly in Egypt, Libya and Tunisia, now require us to be more cautious in our ability to achieve this. To date, we have experienced disruptions in manufacturing, sales and distribution..."

Due to these concerns they have reduced their expectations from double digit growth in 2011 to 7%. The 7% growth assumes that the disrupted markets reurn to normal in the second half.

HIK has been a great investment, since I bought my initial stake in February last year. I sold just over 50% of my holding a year later and today sold the balance. At a prospective P/E of over 18 I feel the risk reward balance has changed and they may struggle this year with the problems that they have, although none are of their own making. I'll place them on my watch list and may re-enter, when the risk reward balance changes.

More hiccups are on the way for Hikma

not sure how Citi could say "was overdone" are they following the news? After Tunisia & Egypt protests now are in Jordan, Yemen, Syria, Saudi Arabia and you never know when Algeria starts again!

What's happening in the middle east will impact Hikma. the million $ question "for how long?" so far it is not looking good.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/article-1352588/MARKET-REPORT-More-hiccups-way-Hikma-Pharmaceuticals.html

Citigroup stopped the rot at Hikma Pharmaceuticals when yesterday morning it advised clients that the 14pc fall in the share price from recent highs on the political unrest in Tunisia and Egypt and fears that it would spread to neighbouring countries was overdone.

The stock rallied 30.5p to 835p but King Abdullah of Jordan's decision to remove his government as a consequence of the continued uncertainty in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region could easily upset the apple cart.

Analyst Dr Paul Cuddon at Peel Hunt downgraded Hikma to sell from hold and has a target price of 720p. He sees news that Marouf Al Bakhit has been given a mandate to implement 'genuine political reform' as a threat to the dominant position Hikma has established in Jordan, the gateway to the MENA market.

Hikma has close ties with the government through its chairman, who recently acted as health minister, and any change is a big threat to its position.

Hikma is currently charged zero tax on exports, which provides significant advantages with regards to pricing in the US and across MENA. A more democratic government may open up the market to more competition in an effort to reduce prices and improve access. Tax rates could rise to as much as 27pc, more than double the current 13pc charge on profits generated from MENA. Disruption to the government is also likely to have a knock-on effect over the wider launch of Hikma's global product portfiolio. By ibnsina

Re: IMS

Analysing the statement and comparing the growth of the various segments taking the most conservative approch from the IMS growth numbers:

Group revenues should be $700m, which would imply a second half growth of just under 11%. Close to the revenue growth in the first half.

Although the driver in the first half was Generics growing by 40%, the second half should see the Branded segment growing the fastest at 19% (assumes 10% for the year, "...low double digit revenue growth..."). Both Generics and Injectables, will show low single digit growth for the second half, compared to 40% and 9% respectively in the first half.

The market may be concerned about this fall off in growth for the Generics market and the colchicine impact, but this is the lowest margin segment generating 39% GM compared to 53% for the branded segment. This also reinforces HIK's claim for margin improvement for the group for the full year.

Of course the numbers may be somewhat better than I have shown as I have taken the lowest percentage growth from their IMS. Either way it will be a reasonable performance for the year with their largest high margin Branded segment leading the way.

I currently have them on a P/E of 22 for this year and almost 20 next year, so maybe investors think this is a little rich for a business with low teen growth with exposure to emerging markets. Although I would not be surprised to see upgrades to earnings for next year, based on the fact that we have some good momentum from the high margin Branded segment. By mutandis13
