Arden Partners-Frack attack!

Frack attack!

Sector Focus
Last week we learned that hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking' was probably responsible for the minor earthquakes that hit Lancashire's Fylde coast earlier this year. It's unclear whether this increased seismic activity actually knocked any of the donkeys over on Blackpool's Pleasure Beach, but the controversy over fracking in this country shouldn't blind us to the rapid growth of the unconventional oil and gas industry that is taking place abroad, particularly in North America.
It's no secret that oil majors such as Shell and ConocoPhillips have been pouring billions into the sector, and in the past we've mused on the implications of this investment for prominent oil services providers such as Schlumberger, Wood Group and Transocean (1 March 2011). But opportunities have also opened up for engineering companies to provide other highly specialised technologies required for exploiting unconventional sources, whether it be for lateral or deep-sea drilling, high-pressure gas injection, advanced 3D-imaging, or the aforementioned fracking.
Hunting for opportunities
A prime example is provided by Hunting , the FTSE 250 engineering company, which is now primarily focused on the oil and gas industry but in the past has been involved in a diverse range of activities, including at one time the management of the UK's independent nuclear deterrent.
Although the company's Well Construction and Intervention services have been used extensively within the conventional segment of the industry, Hunting has developed proprietary technologies to exploit the specific demands of deepwater and unconventional onshore drilling, including the extraction of shale gas.
It is little wonder that Hunting has chosen to focus on these areas when you consider that, since the turn of the millennium, shale gas production in the United States has risen from next to nothing to 13.4bn cubic feet per day, equivalent to a third of the country's natural gas supply and enough to make it virtually self-sufficient in gas again.
That rate of growth is impressive in itself, but bear in mind that the US shale gas industry, although more advanced than either Asia's or Europe's, is still really in its early phase of expansion. Natural gas is used to generate around a quarter of the electricity produced in the US, but a concerted push towards energy independence, together with technological breakthroughs, have provided the impetus for rapid growth. So we can expect to see that share rising significantly over time.

Going sideways
The proportion of rigs in the US drilling horizontally increased from 22.4 per cent in 2007, to 56.7 per cent last year, which illustrates why engineering companies like Hunting have been investing heavily in their lateral drill technologies. Many of Hunting's patented innovations, particularly its tubular connection products, have been developed with shale gas in mind, but a trio of multimillion dollar acquisitions over the past year enhanced the company's ability to exploit these new frontiers. As Daniel Yergin, the US energy oracle and co-founder and chairman of Cambridge Energy Research Associates, recently pointed out: "US oil production is now going up; most people didn't think they would ever see this again...technology keeps opening new doors".
Weir Group is another UK engineering company that is benefiting from the changes under way in the oil and gas industry. A subsidiary, Weir Oil & Gas, serves the wider global oil industry through the design and manufacture of specialist pumps and ancillary equipment. The company's involvement in both the US shale and Canadian tar sands industries has been rising steadily. The increasing importance of this area to Weir's business mix can be gauged by the fact that upstream oil revenues doubled last year, which By SpikeyDT

Hunting continued its strategy of expanding its offering through acquisitions yesterday, with the takeover of Specialty Supply. The oil services firm agreed to buy the Texas-based maker of precision-machined drilling parts for a cool $31m.

Dennis Proctor, chief executive, said the deal builds on earlier acquisitions this year, as the group looks to provide a broad and deep range of services to aid the extraction of conventional and unconventional oil and gas reserves.

Shale gas represents a particular opportunity for Hunting, especially after the recent announcement by Cuadrilla Resources that it was sitting on far higher reserves in the Blackpool area than previously anticipated.

Cuadrilla's findings have given rise to hopes that the UK could be sitting on decades' worth of shale gas, eclipsing even Poland's reserves, which were thought to be Europe's biggest hope in this particular area.

The deal is the latest in a series of bolt-on acquisitions. In August, Hunting acquired Titan for $775m in cash, positioning the company to take advantage of soaring shale gas extraction in the US and Poland, as well as the UK.

Later the same month, Hunting announced the $83.5m purchase of Dearborn Precision Tubular Products, a maker of components for the oil and gas sector, which also services the aviation and medical markets.

Yesterday's takeover is smaller but nonetheless welcome, further building its capability. The $5.5m (£3.4m) pre-tax profit Specialty reported in 2010 will have added about 10 per cent to Hunting's bottom line – based on Hunting's £38.5m profit last year – though the deal could well end up boosting it by far more over the years.

Hunting said yesterday it expected the deal to be "earnings-enhancing in the first full financial year before acquisition costs and normal acquisition adjustments such as fair-value adjustments and amortisation of tangible assets". With the price of oil and gas set to remain high and unconventional drilling all the rage, Hunting's future looks pretty good. By SpikeyDT
