Informa loves yachts

Informa loves yachts

Media group Informa (INF) reported a 4.2 per cent increase in sales for the nine months to September amidst the success of events such as the Monaco Yacht show.

The fully-listed concern grew revenues by 5.2 per cent in its events division, with Informa highlighting the strong performance of shows such as Brazilian printing exhibition Serigrafia, an Australian furniture event and the Monaco Yacht Show. Despite a traditionally 'quiet' July and August the success of the recent Broadband World Forum suggests that there has been 'no impact from the uncertain macro conditions' Informa argues.

In its academic information division turnover rose by 4.1 per cent with the company remarking that both 'Journals and book publishing continue to grow and exhibit their traditional resilience'. Its B2B division saw top line growth of 2.9 per cent.

Chief executive Peter Rigby enthused the company had made 'further positive development this year' and had 'enhanced the business further with an increase in the number of highly resilient events'. Looking ahead he insisted despite the 'uncertain' economic environment Informa has 'not seen any impact on current trading'.

Analysts at Collins Stewart are forecasting pre-tax profits of £294 million (EPS: 37.1p) on sales of £1.26 billion for the year to December 2011. In 2012 profits of £326.5 million (EPS: 41.5p) on revenues of £1.33 billion are expected.

The group has had a challenging year, slipping from a 52 week high of 461.1p to the current price of 369p as investor nerves over any possible affects of the wider economic crisis on its business have increased. The company is however a resilient performer with a diverse range of business interests. Hold.

RNS-Acquisition

DJ Informa plc Acquisition

Acquisition

7 June 2011

ACQUISITIONS ESTABLISH INFORMA AS A LEADING ORGANISER OF TRADE EXHIBITIONS IN BRAZIL

Informa plc, the world's largest publically owned organiser of exhibitions, conferences and training events, has today announced two strategic acquisitions in Brazil.

Informa has acquired Brasil Trade Shows Partners ParticipacoesS.A. (BTS). BTS is a leading organiser of trade shows in the Food & Beverage Services, Furniture Manufacturing and Franchising sectors, with leading brands including Fispal, ABF and ForMobile. BTS has been acquired from DLJ South American Partners LP.

In addition, Informa has acquired Ibratexpo Feiras e Eventos Ltda which includes Serigrafia, the largest sign, screen and digital imaging show in South America from the Alatzatianou family.

The combined maximum cash consideration payable is BRL 210m (GBP81m). Informa expects these acquisitions to be earnings enhancing in 2011 and to enhance the Group's return on capital in 2012.

These acquisitions will further strengthen Informa's global exhibition operations. Serigrafia enhances Informa's leading position in the print sector alongside IPEX, one of the world's largest print related exhibitions. BTS provides a platform for growth in South America and strengthens Informa's experience in the strategically important food sector. Furthermore, the strength of its brands will provide Informa with attractive geo-cloning opportunities.

Commenting on the acquisitions Peter Rigby, Chief Executive, of Informa said:

"These acquisitions are consistent with two of our strategic goals; growing our trade show business and expanding our presence in emerging markets. BTS is an exceptionally well-managed trade show organiser with an enviable reputation in one of the world's most dynamic and fast growing regions. Serigrafia provides the perfect platform on which to expand our print portfolio in the emerging markets. We are delighted that the senior management team of BTS and the founders of Serigrafia are joining the Group on acquisition."

GLOBAL UPTURN IMPROVES THE OUTLOOK FOR INFORMA

Informa is a provider of information both modern and traditional

Monday February 28,2011

By David Shand

As its name suggests, Informa is a provider of information – in ways both modern and traditional.

One division of the company focuses on the electronic delivery of information to the global financial services industry, along with performance analysis and training for companies and government organisations.

A second division provides print, electronic and consultancy services and events to the telecoms, media, maritime and commodities industries, while a third division services academic and scientific communities.

A large proportion of Informa’s operations are cyclical, with demand for them very dependent on the state of the global economy.

As a result it suffered during the downturn. The high levels of debt on its balance sheet didn’t help either.

But with the global economy picking up the situation appears better.

Recent annual results were in line with expectations and demonstrated again that its business model on events is flexible and that Informa can respond quickly to improvements in its markets. In the meantime the academic division should deliver stable growth.

The reduction in debt on the company’s balance sheet, achieved largely through a rights issue in 2009, is likely to result in a free cash flow yield of about 10 per cent this year.

It will also give Informa some strategic flexibility.

Before the global economic downturn, the professional publishing industry was in the process of consolidating.

The economic downturn temporarily sidelined mergers and acquisitions but the rationale for increasing scale remains.

This will create some long-term opportunities for the company to improve its market share.

The cyclicality of its operations means that any reversal in global economic recovery would hurt. And the process of industry consolidation may generate risks as well as opportunities.
